Research in Digital Education - RIDE

Research in Digital Education (RIDE) is an interdisciplinary research group that consists of researchers and Ph.D. students with a range of different professional backgrounds. The group aims to explore children's, young people's and adults' use of technology in teaching and learning. RIDE has a key role within Østfold University College's strategic research initiative The Digital Society and The Østfold AI Hub.

About the group

In the research group RIDE, we study how digital technologies are made relevant in the education of children, young people, and adults. We use a combination of both qualitative and quantitative analyses in studies of how children, young people and adults participate and collaborate in teaching and learning, and we investigate how this takes place in different physical and digital contexts.

The members of the research group apply different types of methods in their research such as ethnography, ethnomethodology, interaction analyses, conversation analyses, learning analytics, document analyses, descriptive statistics, regression analyses, and combinations of the above.

RIDE conducts studies on its own online teaching courses (moocs), an extensive scope of classroom studies, and participates in significant innovative projects where we use design-based research as a method.

RIDE provides teaching at all levels at Østfold University College from bachelor's to doctoral level, as well as offers continuing and further education in the form of MOOCs and through the grant schemes (DEKOMP/REKOMP). Most of the teaching is related to teacher education, continuing education of teachers and the school sector, and the doctoral program.

Research activities

RIDE organizes several research activities. We aim to offer a range of activities to best support our research projects, research plans and publications. The research group is also important for supporting each member's career development and takes special responsibility for the PhD-students who belong to the group.

RIDE works with knowledge and information sharing; presents and gives feedback on paper and article drafts; presents and gives feedback on abstracts and lectures to be held at peer-reviewed conferences; presents research publications; reads core texts; invites visiting researchers; participates in the members' doctoral defenses, mid-term and final readings; works with external funding and project applications, analyzes data, arranges seminars/writing seminars; provides support for and participates in the public debate, and contributes to strategic-administrative decisions and discussions at the university college.
