Knowledge Creations - Knowledge Production through research on the arts and Artistic Research

This research group develop, strengthen, highlight and make visible the diversity of research within the field of art at the Faculty of Teacher Education and Languages.

The research Group's Purpose

The purpose of the research group "Knowledge Creations" is to strengthen artistic research and research on the arts at the Faculty of Teacher Education and Languages at Østfold University College. The group will serve as a forum for researchers in various artistic disciplines: Visual Arts and Crafts, Theater, Drama, and Music, including the various specializations within these fields, such as fine arts, ceramics, photography, video art, traditional arts, textile art, jazz, pop, rock composition, contemporary music, narrative theater, avant-garde, polystylism, post-dramatic theater, performance art, installation, sound art, mask work, music theater, and more.

In an interdisciplinary community, we share experiences, read each other's texts, discuss artistic processes and artistic research projects, and initiate various research projects within and across individual disciplines. The research group will engage with various methods and research disciplines related to artistic research. This is to develop, strengthen, highlight, and make visible the diversity of research within the field of art at the faculty. Through the dissemination of knowledge within and outside the institution, "Knowledge Creations" works specifically to showcase, define, and highlight the faculty's researchers and our research within the field of artistic research. Within research on, for and in/through the arts, both artistic methods and scientific methods are equally relevant and lead to various publicly accessible products. The different formats, including written articles, composite texts, (peer-reviewed expositions), video, stage productions, audio productions, and exhibitions, all have in common that they are equally necessary contributions to increased knowledge for profession-oriented and research-based education.

The research group will address three main directions in research in the field of art: Research on, for, and in/through art. In addition, there is didactic artistic research.

  • Category 1, "on," is associated with scientific methods (musicology, theater studies, art history).
  • Category 2, "for," can relate to both scientific, artistic (Artistic Research), and practice-driven methods.
  • Category 3, "through," relates to artistic research methods. Artistic Research is an artistic parallel to scientific research.

Artistic Research as a research discipline has been on par with scientific research in the Law on Universities and University Colleges since 1995. The research group will primarily be affiliated with Teacher Education and pedagogical subjects but also collaborates with other artists and professionals from study programs and universities and colleges in and outside of Norway.
