Topic: Creativity, Media & the Arts [Disability Studies & Diversity Issues]
Type: Live Presentation: 30-minute live presentation session followed by a 15-minute Q&A session
Keywords: Autism; Actors; Representation
This study uses Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) (Smith et al., 1999), in which professional autistic actors participated in interviews and discussed their professional opportunities and work experiences in film and on television. Participants also described their perceptions of autistic characters.
Autistic community engagement was built into the study design; autism stakeholders, including community members, and parent- and self-advocates helped to develop the interview protocol and procedures, and assisted in recruitment efforts.
Nine autistic actors (6 male; 3 female) participated in the study. Participants played autistic characters in film or on television, and roles included guest stars, recurring guest stars, and voiceover actors on television, and leading and supporting roles in film. Actors were in or were eligible to join the Screen Actors Guild. Participant ages ranged from 16 to 34 years. Actors identified as Caucasian (n=5), mixed race (n=2), Asian (n=1), and Latinx (n=1).
Interviews were recorded and transcribed verbatim. Inductive coding processes were used to become familiar with the data, generate initial codes, and collate codes into themes (Braun & Clarke, 2006).
Four key themes emerged: Opportunities for autistic actors, employment experiences, disclosing the autism diagnosis, and representations promote awareness, but more nuance is needed.

A new way of publishing: Registered Reports 2.0 by Dr Charlotte Pennington.
Vis sammendrag
Growing concerns of replicability and reproducibility have ushered in fast-paced changes to scientific reform under the umbrella term of ‘open science’. We now understand that such concerns stem from academic incentives that reward novel surprising results and quantity over quality which fuel a range of questionable research practices. Study preregistration and Registered Reports (RRs) represent two open science initiatives that aim to improve research quality and rigour, and emerging empirical research demonstrates their effectiveness. However, neither are perfect. This talk will outline study preregistration and the standard Registered Report model before introducing a new form of Registered Reports that reshape academic publishing – Peer Community In Registered Reports (PCI RR). PCI RR is a community-driven initiative that reviews and recommends RRs across the full spectrum of STEM, medicine, social sciences, and humanities. Upon receiving In Principle Acceptance (IPA) of a Stage 1 manuscript, authors are then free to choose from a range of ‘PCI friendly journals’ who agree to publish the Stage 2 manuscript without the need for additional peer review. PCI RRs, therefore, represent an exciting new way of publishing that puts the authors back in control.

Rain Man and the lessons of autistic portrayals in film and TV.

I know all about autism, I've seen that film" is a quote from the movie Snowcake. A woman confidently tells Alan Rickman's character that the idiosyncratic behaviours displayed by Sigourney Weaver's character, who is autistic, needs no explanation. The line alludes to the Oscar-winning Rain Man where Dustin Hoffman played Raymond Babbitt and is often considered detrimental to the cultural canon of fictional autism portrayals. However, following the film's release in 1988, the world saw a gradual rise in autistic characters in the entertainment industry. It marked the starting point of an impactful increase in the awareness of ASD (Conn & Bhugra, 2012).

Pros and cons of character portrayals of autism on TV and film.

Portrayals of characters with Autistic traits on film and in TV-series are increasingly popular. In this lecture, I will talk about our research where we have explored to what extent fictive characters align with known criteria for Autism Spectrum Disorder. Portrayals of Autistic characters can help raise awareness of the condition but can also increase stereotypes and stigma. I will highlight some pros and cons of these character portrayals as well as discuss a few known and less well-known films and TV-series in this genre.

Film and Television Representations of ASD: It’s Not Just about Hollywood.
Vis sammendrag
Recent years have seen a surge of new films and TV shows about ASD (Rohr, 2015; Veltman, 2009). These portrayals of ASD can be useful, because despite of the increased prevalence, many people still have not had direct substantive contact or personal experience with individuals with ASD. Many people form personal perceptions of ASD based on the characters they observe on the screen (Nordahl-Hansen, Øien, & Fletcher-Watson, 2018). Yet, misrepresentations may inadvertently shape misperceptions about individuals with ASD (Berger, 2017). Many characters with ASD, for example, are white young-adult males with savant skills (Singer, 2017); and this narrow scope may be less relatable to cross cultural audiences. Research is needed to examine existing empirical studies about media portrayals of ASD and to call attention to diverse film and television portrayals of ASD.

Portrayals of characters with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and/or with autistic traits on film and in TV-series are increasing. Such portrayals may contribute in increasing awareness of the condition but can also increase stereotypes. Thus, these character portrayals are subject to heated debate within the ASD-community, but also in the general public at large. Following our recent published study on character portrayals of ASD on film and TV we here address some central issues related advantages and disadvantage of such portrayals.
