  Purpose: Drawing from resource-based theorising, the concept of network embeddedness and a process perspective on entrepreneurship, this paper establishes a conceptual framework to explain a multi-level and multi-locational network embeddedness of creative entrepreneurs in non-urban places. It challenges stylised facts about creative entrepreneurship as a predominantly urban phenomenon. Design/methodology/approach: Based upon the conceptual framework for creative entrepreneurship in a non-urban place, an illustrative case study of small-scale creative-design entrepreneurs on the Lofoten Islands in Norway (2019) is utilised to discuss the framework. Findings: The conceptual paper derives a fine-grained understanding about how creative entrepreneurship emerges and develops in non-urban places and contributes to a better understanding of how such places can nurture such entrepreneurship through multiple network embeddedness and resource-exchange configurations. Originality: The paper uses an original conceptual framework. Research limitations/implications: The article will enable further empirical research that tests, validates and, if necessary, refines the framework established. Practical and social implications: Creative entrepreneurs should use various resource-exchange combinations with diverse networks to become locally embedded in non-urban places. Public-policy managers need to be aware of this variety that may exist with the network embeddedness of such entrepreneurs to support them and develop the location through resource provisions.   The accelerating past globalisation had pressurised various types of enterprises, including state-owned enterprises, to adopt appropriate decision-making approaches for their internationalisation strategies. The present book chapter illustrates the role that an entrepreneurial approach had played in the decision-making process about the international expansion of an incumbent, and large, state-owned enterprise after its initial internationalisation. The case of a formerly state-owned telecommunication enterprise from Scandinavia will be explored that highlights aspects of entrepreneurial decision-making, internal organisational changes, and the influence of individual managers within the executive management team which influenced the process of internal decision-making. The empirical chapter makes important contributions to notably the practice of entrepreneurial decision-making for internationalisation; it unveils the complexities of internal decision-making processes, including the struggles between individual managers, and thereby provides a better understanding for management practitioners about decision-making for competitiveness and growth during the internationalisation of large, yet inexperienced enterprises.   The present chapter illuminates aspects of managerial behaviour concerning the internationalisation of SMEs in emerging markets through the lens of two related phenomena: the “illusion of control” and the “deprivation of control”. The chapter takes inspiration from management control literature, which points to existing tensions in the behavioural patterns shown by managers during organisational processes. We adapt ideas from the management control literature to an international entrepreneurship context with a focus on SME entrepreneurs and their practices in an emerging market. More specifically, the chapter highlights how such entrepreneurs juggle trust and control during the internationalisation process to shape the appropriate practices and strategies for their market expansion. Based upon a case study from Norwegian SMEs with long-standing international operations in Russia, the chapter provides the following learning points: firstly, “illusion of control” and “deprivation of control” represent distinct managerial mindsets, which are embodied in the entrepreneurial practices of SME entrepreneurs. Secondly, these mindsets can be conducive to the development of their international operations in emerging markets over time when they instigate a necessary change from purely trust-based practices towards a mix of trust and control. Thirdly, the mindsets of SME entrepreneurs can also be detrimental to the growth and performance strategies in Russia when trust-based practices remain dominant over time even though important market dynamics and political-institutional changes push the entrepreneurs towards more control-based practices. The chapter concludes that SME entrepreneurs need to find an appropriate balance of trust and control in a globalised setting to avoid detrimental configurations of an “illusion of control” and to take the necessary corrections through a “deprivation of control”.

  Structured abstract Purpose The paper presents a historical case study of Norwegian transnational entrepreneurs (1880-1930s) and the ecosystems that they founded in Russia’s Arctic periphery. Drawing from the contemporary transnational entrepreneurship and entrepreneurial ecosystem literature, and inspired by AnnaLee Saxenian’s concept of “brain circulation”, we explore the journey and impact of these entrepreneurs in a time of evolving political turbulence. Design/methodology/approach We apply a mixed-methodology approach, drawing from nine qualitative interviews held in 2021 and secondary material, including historical books, a podcast, videos, and archival data. Findings The Norwegian entrepreneurs were both “pulled” by and “pushed” to the Russian region, their “New America”, where they could apply their personal skills and exploit their rich social and financial capital in order to establish a local entrepreneurial ecosystem. However, radical political change altered the context, which led many of the entrepreneurs to re-migrate to Norway. Originality The paper presents an original, novel case study on the historical role of transnational entrepreneurs across different cultural settings, their impact on a foreign peripheral location, including social-network building, and evolving political change in the historical context. The findings are relevant for contemporary management literature. Research limitations/implications The paper demonstrates the role of the political context for contemporary entrepreneurship and management research, as transnational entrepreneurs and international expatriates remain vulnerable to political change. Practical implications Public-policy actors and managers in companies need to support highly-skilled transnational entrepreneurs, including expatriates, in a setting with turbulence, crisis, and even war, in order to foster the sustainable contribution of entrepreneurial migrants to regional economic development across different countries.   Vi presenterer her vår egen tilnærming til modulbasert undervisning, belyst gjennom erfaring med undervisning av et bachelorkurs om bærekraftig ledelse. Videre forklarer vi hvorfor vi har valg en slik tilnærming, kontrastert med aktuelle alternativer. På basis av dette diskuterer vi, mer generelt, hvordan modulbasert undervisning kan representere en hensiktsmessig tilnærming som for undervisning av ledelsesfag rettet mot å finne frem til praktiske løsninger i en sammensatt og dynamisk sosial verden. Vi knytter dette til idealer for utdannelse, læring, og personlig vekst representert ved John Deweys pragmatiske tilnærming. Vi argumenterer videre for at digitale verktøy som har blitt tilgjengelig i vår tid er med på å ytterligere understøtte og effektivisere modulbasert undervisning i fag og studier knyttet til ledelse, spesielt i relasjon til praktiske sosiale tema som bærekraft.
