About the project- Background and purpose

The effective use of technologies is a key enabler in delivering health and social care now and in the future. However, to benefit from technological solutions and services, health professionals have a role to play in assisting the patient and explaining the use of technological / digital solutions, and also how these solutions can be included as an integral part of the healthcare services provided. The literature shows that healthcare personnel and their knowledge are crucial determinants of whether technology is adopted or not (Holthe et al., 2020; Jacelon & Hanson, 2013).

Informal feed-back has indicated that even though healthcare services are driven towards digitalisation, healthcare personnel do not see the advantages, or use the devices as intended. Due to the nurses’ central role in community healthcare services, it is essential to discover their acceptance and to evaluate the implementation and utilization of existing and planned solutions.

The aim of this study is to explore nurses’, nursing teachers’ and nursing students’ acceptance and utilization of various technology enabled care solutions in community healthcare services.

More specifically, we will:

  • translate and validate a questionnaire of technology acceptance; and
  • explore nurses’, nursing teachers’ and nursing students’ acceptance and utilization of various technology in community healthcare services both quantitatively and qualitatively.

Impact

Results from this project will add essential information towards the planning, developing, implementing and improving of nursing services and digital solutions, as well as educational programs for nurses.

The planned project will be based on an interprofessional collaboration between researchers and students from the university college/universities, and collaborators from different educational institutions including community healthcare services located both nationally and internationally.
