Advice: Buying a student PC

Do you want to buy a computer to use during your studies at HIØ? For most people, this is a big investment, so it's important that you make the right decitions. Here is som advice to help you find the right computer for your study.

Please note that this is general advice. If you are going to study subjects that are likely to make special demands for the computer you will be using, you should consult with your subject leader. In most studies, a PC with Windows would be preferable to a Mac with OSX or a PC with Linux. Chromebook or tablets is not recommended.

  • Laptop is recommended for most studies
  • Microsoft Windows 10 is recommended for most studies
  • At least 8 GB RAM
  • At least 250 GB SSD hard drive
  • Support for wireless network: minimum 802.11ac
  • Good battery time
  • A good bag that protects your laptop
  • Make sure your insurance covers damage and theft of your laptop and that the amount limit is high enough to cover your loss if an accident occurs

External devices

  • Remember to copy your data to an external hdd and/or cloud storage. We recommend to save study related documents and files in your Østfold University College Onedrive in Office 365. Make sure you download the data you want to keep before you finish your studies. Read more about saving documents and files at HIØ.
  • If you are connecting your computer to a TV, monitor or projector, make sure that your computer has the right communication ports. Many rooms at HiØ have a screen or TV that can be used as an external display. Commonly used standards are HDMI (common for TVs and big screens) and DisplayPort (DP). At HiØ, most monitors and projectors have HDMI connection.
  • If you use your computer a lot, an external mouse and keyboard are useful. If you use a wireless mouse and keyboard, you must remember to always have batteries available.
