Arrival Woes and Silver Linings

Milan welcomed me with open arms, but fate had a different plan. Finding accommodation seemed like an impossible task, and I fell victim to a scam through Facebook Marketplace. Picture this: me, arriving in Milan with empty pockets, a dash of trauma, and nowhere to call home. But hey, life always has a way of turning things around.

With resilience and determination, I sought the guidance of my student buddy, a fantastic companion assigned to me by Polimi. Together, we explored the college and unearthed valuable tips for finding housing. The welcome week organized by Polimi introduced us to the institution’s contributions, how to obtain an Italian student resident card, and Italian health insurance. And guess what? It all culminated in a delightful aperitivo, sipping on Aperol Spritz while enjoying some tasty snacks.

Eureka! A Place to Call Home

Ah, the sweet victory! Amidst the hustle and bustle of the welcome week, I crossed paths with several amazing individuals and finally found a place to live. My new home was conveniently located near the legendary San Siro stadium, where I had the privilege of witnessing an epic match between Inter and Sassuolo. The Italian football culture swept me off my feet, leaving me in awe of the energy and atmosphere at San Siro. Trust me, experiencing it firsthand is an absolute must!

The Fun Begins!

With my new roommates and a cozy place to call our own, the adventure truly began. Together, we embarked on exciting trips organized by ESN Polimi (Erasmus Student Network). ESN always had something exciting up their sleeve, offering a wide range of affordable activities and trips across Italy. Here are just a few highlights:

  1. Beholding the Masterpiece: Can you believe I had the privilege of seeing Da Vinci's magnificent Last Supper? Located in Milan, this masterpiece usually has months-long waiting lists for tickets. But with the help of ESN, I managed to secure a spot and marveled at this awe-inspiring artwork.
  2. Gorgonzola Bike Trip: Imagine pedaling through picturesque landscapes along the scenic Martesana Canal, all while treating ourselves to the mouthwatering flavors of Gorgonzola cheese. It was a delightful adventure, perfect for capturing stunning Instagram-worthy pictures and savoring some cheesy goodness.
  3. Sardinia Trip: Brace yourself for the ultimate island getaway! Our journey began with a delectable pesto pasta feast in Genova, the birthplace of pesto. From there, we hopped on a ferry that felt more like a cruise ship, dancing and reveling with fellow exchange students. Finally, we arrived in Sardinia, boasting some of the cleanest and most breathtaking beaches you'll ever lay eyes on. Indulging in the local Sardinian cuisine paired with exquisite wines was the cherry on top. And let's not forget the guided tour to Scavi di Nora, a true archaeological gem.

These were just a glimpse of the numerous events and trips that kept us entertained throughout the semester. Thanks to Polimi's partial sponsorship, everything was budget-friendly, allowing us to make the most of our time in Italy.

Exploring Rome, Vatican, and More

I embarked on unforgettable trips with my friends, discovering the rich history of Rome and Vatican City. Witnessing the Pope and delving into the ancient wonders of the Eternal City left an indelible mark on my soul. Additionally, a trip to Sicily granted us the opportunity to stand on the same ground where the final shot of The Godfather film was filmed. And let's not forget the charming day trips to Lake Como and Verona, offering breathtaking scenery and a romantic atmosphere that would make any couple's heart flutter.

Academic Challenges and Triumphs

Amidst the whirlwind of adventures, it's important to remember that an exchange semester also requires dedication to academics. At Polimi, the workload was demanding, and the campus buzzed with an atmosphere of excellence. It felt competitive, but in the best way possible. The academic structure is rigorous. There are five exam sessions, and in each session students usually cover three subjects. This allows for better planning and reduced workload.

One of the standout course was Business Information System-2, an experimental offering that provided an option to work on a real-time project with a company. Students who chose this project-based option were exempt from the final exam. While it posed a greater challenge, I strongly believe the project-based option provided invaluable exposure and real-world experience. Selection for this course was based on CV evaluation, adding an extra layer of excitement.

As I write this report, I still have three courses remaining to complete, along with submissions and exams. Rest assured, I'll update this section once I've conquered those academic hurdles.

Tips and Recommendations for Future Explorers

Based on my experiences, here are some tips and recommendations for anyone considering an exchange semester in Milan:

  1. Arrive in Milan first, then search for accommodation. Many people, including myself, fell victim to scams. Lean on the Erasmus Student Network for assistance, and consider exploring websites like DoveVivo and SpotAHome for reliable housing options.
  2. Take advantage of Milan's excellent transportation network. The student transport card, priced at a mere 20-22 Euros per month, offers convenient and affordable travel options.
  3. Embrace the challenges of Polimi's academic demands. Prepare yourself for hard work and time management. If possible, opt for less taxing courses or allocate ample time to complete your assignments.
  4. Don't miss the electrifying atmosphere of a football match at San Siro. Immerse yourself in the vibrant vibes and witness the passion of Italian football firsthand.

Exchange: An Unforgettable Journey

In conclusion, I wholeheartedly recommend embarking on an exchange semester. It's a transformative experience that will:

  • Immerse you in a new culture, tantalize your taste buds with new culinary delights, and introduce you to lifelong friends.
  • Push you out of your comfort zone, enabling personal growth and self-discovery.
  • Expose you to a different education system, allowing you to appreciate the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches.
  • Cultivate your confidence, empowering you to take on challenges and overcome obstacles with ease.

So, gear up and embark on your own thrilling exchange adventure. The roller-coaster of emotions awaits!
