MA Performance Works 2020

A sharing of works by the first graduating class of masters in performance: Hanna Filomen Mjåvatn, Durga Bishwokarma, Linn Haldrup Lorenzen, Fernanda Branco, Inger-Reidun Olsen, Eva Tabita Jaunzemis

We are
finishing two years of exploration, play, risk, lostness and togetherness.

It never
stops, but to mark the end of our master circle we would like to share with you where we are at this moment in our exploration.

Six individual MA Performance students will share part of phase two of their research, in a series of digital events this spring. NTA’s study plan for the MA Performance research project is organized as a series of public events happening between fall and spring of the second year of the course, organized in two phases, rather than a single final MA production.

All times are in the Norwegian time zone.

A letter to the audience:

Dear audience

My name is Durga Bishwokarma. I am a Nepalese performance and multidisciplinary artist living and studying in Norway. I hope you are all healthy and safe at your home in this crucial global pandemic situation, COVID-19.

At the moment I am preparing my final MA research performance (action) in Fredrikstad, a small town in south east of Norway, and here I would like to invite you into my performance to witness my work and be with me during my art action sharing moment. I will share with you a 12-hour durational live streaming work on Vimeo. This event is open to all ages – to witness my actions. Feel free to enter and leave the performance at any time during the 12 hours, but it would be nice if you returned at some point. You can stay for as short or for as long as you would like.

You will find me in my living room cleaning. I will be silent, akin to a fasting ritual. Fasting is a spiritual practice washing over my different thoughts to give space to pray for something special. This time I pray for the world to be normal and healthier soon.

The performance is a conceptually based reflection on the current situation of COVID-19. Actions include deep cleaning activities, accompanied by pre-recorded verbatim text that I have collected from the world’s media: news reports, Facebook posts, conversations with friends and from the virtual sources connected with the COVID-19 global pandemic lockdown situation. The performance is a domestic work as arts practice; it is about finding the relationship between ‘dirt’ and purity and commitment to a 12-hour durational process as a reflection of how the world is currently locked in a time of durational waiting.

My focus is to find a relationship between personal and universal during these unsettling times.

Thank you.

You are alone you are not alone you are alone you are not here
I am here I am not here you are here I am not here I am here.

Through The Enchanted Mirror you are invited to take part in an exploration of the possibilities and limits of a bodiless encounter. An investigation into the proximity of distant intimacy. A chance to shape shift just for a moment.

Linn Haldrup Lorenzen is working in between performance and visual art, inspired from the concept of ‘availabism’ (as propounded by Kembra Pfahler) using whatever materials are at hand. She is investigating how to disturb bodily categorisation systems through her own experience living with chronic illness refusing to identify with potentially reductive labels by making them manifest in her work. She is occupied with questions of use and uselessness, real and imaginary, visible and invisible, in relation to the potential limitations and categorisations of the body in between illness and wellness.

To experience the performance:
As audience, Linn invites you to schedule your entry for Saturday and/or Sunday here. You will receive an exclusive Zoom invitation via your e-mail, together with other potential instructions. Please note, a shape shift lasts approx. 20 minutes and is only for one person at the time via the Zoom application.

Please download the Zoom application to your phone or tablet or computer. It is possible to see it from an internet browser also, but I highly recommend downloading the app, due to quality.

As part of my MA research I am continuing the exploration with clay as performative material. In phase one, last December I was doing my research at NTA and was indoors sharing the performance «Jeg graver (I am digging)». In this second phase I have been exploring the clay outdoors at Talberg Nedre gård in Sarpsborg. I was supposed to share a performance at the farm with audiences, but because of the Covid-19 situation I have explored making a film in collaboration with visual artist and filmmaker André Wulf.

I am a Norwegian choreographer and performance artist exploring my body in relationship with the performativity and agencies of places and non-human materials, and them as equal collaborators in performance. I am curious about what happens when we actually listen to the other and ourselves in relation to them? How can that inform and shape our life choices? In which way can the affect caused by them affect us, our ideas about our self and our ways and ideas of co-existence? Is it possible to learn about their thing power in itself, without projecting and humanizing the material as something that does not satisfy human needs and desires, but that has value in itself? Would that be possible?
