For the first time since Abraham Lincoln’s victory in 1860 – a victory that set off the Civil War – there is a chance that the losing side may refuse to accept the results. The COVID-19 crisis, bitter political division and a sitting President who has repeatedly claimed that he can only lose if the election is “rigged” have led to widespread fears of post-election chaos. In a sense, then, it is not just the next president that will be decided, but possibly the very future of American democracy itself.
Associate Professor Robert Mikkelsen will analyze the results and review the consequences surrounding what promises to be an extraordinary election.
