Faglige interesser

My research draws on interdisciplinary approaches, including ethnographic fieldwork with children and young people. I am concerned with inclusion and exclusion in education, focusing mainly on children and young people. My most recent work aims to develop knowledge about how children and young people use and are affected by technological transformations in their everyday lives. I have been the scientific coordinator of a large-scale European Research project funded by Horizon 2020 (Grant Agreement no. 870548) entitled The Impact of Technological Transformations on the Digital Generation (DigiGen). My work in DigiGen aims to better understand the link between digital technology, vulnerability, risk and resilience. 

I have also conducted research focusing on marginalisation in education, focusing specifically on language issues, social justice, gender, education and youth. This work has focused on how education and, more specifically, teacher education can contribute to providing competencies for democratic participation. I am currently working on two other EU-funded projects. The first project funded under the Horizon 2020 programme is IKDS4ALLL (Key Inclusive Digital Strategies for Lifelong Learning) and a new EU Horizon Europe project STRIDE (Strategies for Achieving Equity and Inclusion in Education, Training and Learning in Democratic Europe).

From 2008-2014 I was the scientific coordinator of the Gender Equality, Education and Poverty (GEEP), funded by NORAD. The project focused on critical questions surrounding gender equality, equity, and education within a context of poverty in post-conflict South Africa and Sudan.

Bakgrunn

I am a full professor at OsloMet and have a secondary position at Høgskolen i Østfold. I have a PhD from the University of Oslo (UiO), an M.Phil in Comparative and International Education from UiO, and a BA degree from the University of Iceland. I have contributed extensively to the field of Comparative and International Education through several professional activities, including being elected as Vice-President of the US Comparative and Interiantl Education Society (CIES) (2023-2026) and a board member (2014-2017). I am also the editor-in-chief of the Nordic Journal of Comparative and International Education (NJCIE). I have contributed to the international educational arena through several activities, for instance, as a member of the Selection Committee for Solutions Summit 2017, United Nations Non-Governmental Liaison Service (UN-NGLS) (2017-2018), VISJON2030 Programme Board, Norwegian Research Council and Ministry of Foreign Affairs (2016). I am also a Member of several Peer Review Committees, including:

  • CHANSE (Collaboration of Humanities and Social Sciences in Europe Transformations) programme
  • The Vienna Science and Technology Fund
  • The Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF)
