About the project

Stribe is a Web application designed to connect and engage students at Østfold University College with one another. Our goal was to create a more social campus community by coordinating and accommodating physical social interactions in real-time amongst like-minded students.

At its core, Stribe focuses on connecting students. Upon logging in students are greeted with a grid of theme-based groups all created by other students. Whether you want to find a study friend, grab some lunch, play sports, do some reading or just socialize, Stribe makes it easy to discover and join groups that fit your interests. Groups contain a title, description and a selection of themes. These groups are presented visually as boxes allowing students to simply browse, search and filter through the active groups both on desktop and mobile.

To complement these real-time groups, Stribe incorporates a location-based feature. Upon creation, each group can be assigned to a specific physical location within the university’s main building, making it convenient for students to identify where fellow group members are seeing each other. The physical location of the groups is shown in a 2D floor plan, which updates itself according to the active groups, giving students a bird’s eye view of all current social interactions on campus.

In an optimal scenario we imagine students accessing Stribe by scanning QR codes found at campus entrances, allowing students to dive straight into socializing at campus. We are therefore hoping that the ease of use will encourage more interactions at campus, letting Stribe positively affect the social landscape at Østfold University College. This can ultimately help us reach the goal of creating a more social campus for students and potentially improve their academic performance through collaboration.

If interested in Stribe, pass by our stand for a chat and to try the application!

About the client

In fall of 2022 we decided that we wanted to deliver our own project proposal out of interest, instead of selecting project proposals available from the available sources. In turn we did not have the traditional client dynamic of working with a company or the school directly, meaning the project idea, decisions and requirements had to originate from ourselves. This led to a great learning experience of trial and error, as we had many freedoms in choosing our programming language, frameworks, technologies, features, design and so on. As a result, we ended up making valuable mistakes and changes by scrapping some technologies in favor of others throughout the project lifecycle. Despite this, we still received guidance from our supervisor and Ida Katrine who served as client to consult us to make sure we were on the right track. In addition, she has been available for feedback and guidance regarding more technical aspects like dealing with databases and structuring our codebase. To conclude, this project gave us valuable learning experiences by improving our technical skills and teamwork abilities for future work.
