Two new PhD-students at the Department of Computer Science and Communication

Department for Computer Science and Communication likes to welcome and introduce our two new PhD-students, who both started this autumn.

Arianna Sica

Arianna Sica is going to explore the notion of Artificial Emotion Intelligence (AEI) and to evaluate the ethical, social, and political implications surrounding the implementation of AEI specifically into companion robots. AEI refers to a technology able to detect and recognise others’ emotions, determine behaviour and activity selection based on simulated emotional states, and express emotion towards interlocutors. Companion robots belong to the wider category of social robots, whose main goal is to interact socially with the user and in which the role of emotions and affection acquires particular importance.

Her analysis will help to ensure that adequate precautions are considered and built into AEI systems as an integral part of the robotic design. In addition, it will facilitate clear guidelines and regulations for safe and effective development and use of AEI into companion robots.

Sevil Çalışkan

Sevil Çalışkan is going to work on the project Artificial Intelligence (AI) for Assessment for Learning (AfL) to Improve Learning and Teaching in 21st Century (AI4AfL). The AI4AfL project aims to develop new Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology that can analyze written texts and provide syntactic, semantic, and sentimental automatic feedback individually. It will be achieved by making use of the latest NLP algorithms and text mining techniques as well as interpretable machine learning methods for feedbacks.”

Supervisor: Hasan Ogul

We are so happy to have you both on our team!
