  This paper reports the presentation and discussion during the Cybersecurity of Critical Infrastructures workshop organized as a part of the 18 th IFIP Summer School on Privacy and Identity Management. Furthermore, this paper also pointed to several promising future research directions. This workshop was primarily aimed at empowering PhD candidates, MSc students, and early-career researchers with insights into Critical Infrastructure (CI) security. The workshop provided participants with guidance on navigating the intricacies of safeguarding CIs, such as those in the energy and oil and gas sectors. It encompasses various aspects, from familiarizing participants with cybersecurity standards and frameworks to understanding tools and approaches that adversaries might leverage to target a system. Additionally, it also addresses how to mitigate socio-legal implications and security issues, particularly in relation to human factors. This initiative embraced a holistic approach to cybersecurity education, covering vital components like rigorous risk management, comprehensive cybersecurity training and awareness programs. This in turn would equip participants with some essential knowledge and skills to fortify critical operations against the ever-evolving cyber threat landscape.

  In today’s rapidly changing world, educators stand at the crossroads. Tomorrow’s teachers are responsible of equipping their pupils with essential 21st-century skills, a task that transcends mere professional boundaries. As the educational landscape evolves, teacher education programs grapple with the mandate to adapt curricula to this new societal complexity. Our study delves into uncharted territory: the intersection where arts, culture, technology design and pedagogy converge. Collaborations between stakeholders from these diverse domains yield a wealth of insights. Through codesign, we negotiate roles, seeking common ground - a reflective practice that may give rise to a “third space”. Drawing from our analyses, we propose essential aspects for facilitators of such processes to consider. These insights could contribute to the goal of nurturing safe, innovative “third” spaces where educators assume new roles and shape the future of interdisciplinary course design in teacher education.

  Teacher education programs should equip future teachers with the knowledge and experience needed to engage in cross-sectorial collaborations with external partners. Within our teacher education programs, we have strategically planned and organized multiple labs to explore how such learning activities should be designed. In this article, we present and discuss the implementation and impact of the three labs from the perspective of the project leaders. By using the design choice framework for co-creation, we shed light on the decision-making process undertaken by project management to facilitate these labs as third spaces.

  This article reviews and maps the literature on how co-creation and co-design have been used in relation to research on interprofessional collaborations in education and in practice. Through a review of the 105 research articles, we find that both co-creation and co-design have mattered more recently, both as methodological approaches and to describe aspects of interprofessional collaboration. Researchers attuned to working directly with practitioners to solve pressing societal issues increasingly use co-design and co-creation for this purpose.

  Cellular automata and other discrete dynamical systems have long been studied as models of emergent complexity. Recently, neural cellular automata have been proposed as models to investigate the emerge of a more general artificial intelligence, thanks to their propensity to support properties such as self-organization, emergence, and open-endedness. However, understanding emergent complexity in large scale systems is an open challenge. How can the important computations leading to emergent complex structures and behaviors be identified? In this work, we systematically investigate a form of dimensionality reduction for 1-dimensional and 2-dimensional cellular automata based on coarse-graining of macrostates into smaller blocks. We discuss selected examples and provide the entire exploration of coarse graining with different filtering levels in the appendix (available also digitally at this link: https://s4nyam.github.io/eca88/. We argue that being able to capture emergent complexity in AI systems may pave the way to open-ended evolution, a plausible path to reach artificial general intelligence.

  We present a system for estimating the friction of the pavement surface at any curved road section, by arriving at a consensus estimate, based on data from vehicles that have recently passed through that section. This estimate can help following vehicles. To keep costs down, we depend only on standard automotive sensors, such as the IMU, and sensors for the steering angle and wheel speeds. Our system’s workflow consists of: (i) processing measurements from vehicular sensors, (ii) transmitting short kinematic summaries from vehicles to a road side unit (RSU), using V2X communication, and (iii) estimating the friction coefficients, by running a machine learning regressor at the RSU, on summaries from individual vehicles, and then combining several such estimates.We study two key questions: (i) should each individual road section have a local friction coefficient regressor, or can we use a global regressor that covers all the possible road sections? and (ii) how accurate are the resulting regressor estimates? We test the performance of design variations of our system, using simulations of normal driving scenarios at curved road sections, using the commercial package Dyna4. We consider a single vehicle type with varying levels of tyre wear, and a range of road friction coefficients. We find that: (a) only a marginal loss of accuracy is incurred in using a global regressor as compared to local regressors, (b) the consensus estimate at the RSU has a worst case error of about ten percent, if the combination is based on at least fifty recently passed vehicles, and (c) our regressors have root mean square (RMS) errors that are less than five percent. The RMS error rate of our system is half as that of a commercial friction estimation service [7].But when tested with data from extreme driving manoeuvres that were unseen in the training data, our regressor performs an order of magnitude worse than on data from normal driving runs on curved road sections. Still our regressor’s RMS errors on such test data are no worse than the state of the art Artificial Neural Network regressors [18], [30].

  We study the probabilistic sampling of a random variable, in which the variable is sampled only if it falls outside a given set, which is called the silence set. This helps us to understand optimal event-based sampling for the special case of IID random processes, and also to understand the design of a sub-optimal scheme for other cases. We consider the design of this probabilistic sampling for a scalar, log-concave random variable, to minimize either the mean square estimation error, or the mean absolute estimation error. We show that the optimal silence interval: (i) is essentially unique, and (ii) is the limit of an iterative procedure of centering. Further we show through numerical experiments that super-level intervals seem to be remarkably near-optimal for mean square estimation. Finally we use the Gauss inequality for scalar unimodal densities, to show that probabilistic sampling gives a mean square distortion that is less than a third of the distortion incurred by periodic sampling, if the average sampling rate is between 0.3 and 0.9 samples per tick.

  Critical Infrastructures (CIs) are vital for modern societies, encompassing diverse sectors such as healthcare, banking, emergency services, energy, water distribution, oil and gas, and transportation. Over time, these CIs have become increasingly reliant on technology to ensure their seamless operations. The reliable and secure operation of these CIs holds paramount importance for a nation's economy and the well-being of society. This paper presents the findings and discussions from the 4th International Workshop on Engineering and Cybersecurity of Critical Systems (EnCyCriS - 2023). The main purpose of this EnCyCriS workshop is to collect contributions from practitioners and researchers working on challenges and solutions for engineering and cybersecurity of critical systems in the Fourth Revolution (4IR). The 2023 edition has accepted and presented six papers. In addition, there was a keynote talk from a Senior Research Scientist in safety and security of digital technologies within safety critical industries in addition to an open discussion about the "Future of IT and OT". This workshop was co-located with the 45th International Conference on Software Engineering (ICSE - 2023), which took place on 20th May 2023.

  The introduction of Industry 4.0 and IIoT has enabled the interconnection of information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT) and exposed industrial control systems to cyber threats. Industrial cybersecurity requires knowledge, skill, and collaboration between IT and OT. A comparison of graduate curricula of software engineering and systems engineering identifies competencies related to industrial control systems cybersecurity. Industry experts are interviewed to identify needs for cybersecurity skills and competencies. Results from the mapping are discussed in the context of software and systems engineering challenges in ICS cybersecurity and leveraged against industry experiences and needs expressed through interviews with three OT and IT industry professionals. The curricula mapping reveals variations in both how they are organised and expressed to the extent that subjective interpretation is required for evaluation and comparison. The interviews with the industry experts indicate a gap between graduate competence from the curricula and industry needs.

  Cellular Automata (CAs) have potential as powerful parallel computational systems, which has lead to the use of CAs as reservoirs in reservoir computing. However, why certain Cellular Automaton (CA) rules, sizes and input encodings are better or worse at a given task is not well understood. We present a method that enables identification and visualization of the specific information content, flow and transformations within the space-time diagram of CA. We interpret each spatio-temporal location in CA’s space-time diagram as a function of its input and call this novel notion the CA’s Canonical Computations (CCs). This allows us to analyze the available information from the space-time diagrams as partitions of the input set. The method also reveals how input-encoder-rule interactions transform the information flow by changing features like spatial and temporal location stability as well as the specific information produced. This general approach for analysing CA is discussed for the engineering of reservoir computing systems.

  Random Boolean networks (RBN) and Cellular Automata (CA) operate in a very similar way. They update their state with simple deterministic functions called Boolean function or Transition Table (TT), both being essentially the same mechanism under different names. This paper applies a concept most known from CA called Minimum Equivalence (ME). ME is applied to RBN and shows how to calculate the number of unique computations for a given number of neighbours. Crucially, it is shown how RBN rules are even more equivalent than in CA, how the set can be reduced into even fewer unique rules, and how the concept becomes more relevant with larger neighbourhoods. For example, switching transformation alone reduces the number of unique rules in RBN with 4 neighbours from 65 536 to only 3 984 (6.1%) rules. Additionally, this paper examines the ME and transformations in substrates beyond Elementary CA (ECA), such as CA with additional spatial dimensions and number of states.

  Industrial Control Systems (ICS) are widely used to carry out the fundamental functions of a society and are frequently employed in Critical Infrastructures (CIs). Consequently, protection against cyber-attacks is essential for these systems. Over the years, numerous cyber-attack detection system concepts have been proposed, each employing a distinct set of processes and methodologies. Despite this, there is a significant gap in the field of techniques for detecting cyber-attacks on ICS. Most existing studies used device logs, which require considerable pre-processing and understanding before they can be utilized for intrusion detection in an ICS environment. In this paper, we proposed an intrusion detection using an autoencoder for feature dimensionality reduction trained on network flow data via a Deep Convolutional Neural Network (DCNN) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM), which does not require prior knowledge of the underlying architecture and network's topology. The experimental analysis was performed on the ICS dataset and gas pipeline data given by Mississippi State University (MSU). The LSTM model achieved an accuracy greater than 99% and an AUC-ROC of 99.50% on the ICS data, whereas the DCNN model achieved an accuracy of 96.0% and an AUC-ROC of 97.20% on the gas pipeline network data, with extremely low false negatives and false positives. The results of the study showed that LSTM is superior to DCNN in detecting anomalies in ICS. In addition, the results disclosed that LSTM and DCNN are effective at time series prediction tasks. This observation is encouraging, as DCNN and LSTM are smaller, faster, and more straightforward than the deep neural network and recurrent neural networks utilized in previous research. The proposed IDS architecture is a low-cost, network-based solution that requires minimal processing, performs unsupervised, and is straightforward to implement in a real-world environment.

  Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) are groups of stand-alone gadgets that typically feature one or more sensors (for example, light level, temperature), with relatively limited computing capabilities, and a wireless connection that enable interaction with a base station. Today, WSN is being implemented within critical infrastructures such as connected vehicles, drones, smart cities, smart grids, and surveillance systems. The major issue of WSN is that they are primarily focused on security issues linked to packet transfer across network's multiple sensor nodes. Intrusion detection is essential due to the growing importance of WSN security. To address this flaw in WSN, an effective wrapper feature selection founded on the Firefly algorithm (FFA) is developed for the selection of significant attributes in this paper. This wrapper-based feature selection solution reduces time consumption to a higher extent while also increasing the network's lifetime and scalability. In the first phase of this work, data preprocessing was performed with a minimum-maximum normalization approach, subsequently, FFA was used for feature dimensionality reduction and C5.0 for the classification. The simulations were done using the UNSW-NB1S benchmark data, and the suggested firefly with C5.0 (FFA-C5.0) has an accuracy of 98.7%.

  This article presents a critical review of research on digital fabrication in K-12 arts and crafts education. We provide an overview of the research field from two perspectives: 1) digital fabrication technologies and classroom practices, and 2) applied theoretical frameworks and research methodologies. Results show that robotics, e-textiles and 3D are the most common digital fabrication themes in arts and crafts education. In the typical DF research project, a qualitative paradigm is chosen, and learning is described from a constructionist perspective. We conclude the article with two specific opportunities for consolidating research on digital fabrication for arts and crafts education.

  While democratic practices, balancing powers, mutual learning and tools and techniques are the principles of Participatory Design (PD), they are all influenced by the practice of PD “facilitation” and the role of the facilitator(s). Facilitation in PD has been usually studied as a single entity with a facilitator that faces dilemmas in her/his role in relation to PD participants and her/his own motives and values. In this paper, we contribute to PD facilitation practice literature by studying facilitation as collaboration work compounded by many entities. We conducted a reflective analysis of the facilitation practices in two PD projects that we have managed. We found that PD projects have a multitude of facilitators. These facilitators belong to four categories: user experts, domain experts, PD experts and assistant facilitators. In time and in different PD activities facilitators may join or leave the project and also shift between categories while their expertise expands. We define this as “the network of facilitators” and discuss how such a perspective can help to improve the facilitation practice in PD.

  As demand for computational resources reaches unprecedented levels, research is expanding into the use of complex material substrates for computing. In this study, we interface with a model of a hydrodynamic system, under development by a startup, as a computational reservoir and optimize its properties using an evolution in materio approach. Input data are encoded as waves applied to our shallow water reservoir, and the readout wave height is obtained at a fixed detection point. We optimized the readout times and how inputs are mapped to the wave amplitude or frequency using an evolutionary search algorithm, with the objective of maximizing the system’s ability to linearly separate observations in the training data by maximizing the readout matrix determinant. Applying evolutionary methods to this reservoir system substantially improved separability on an XNOR task, in comparison toimplementations with hand-selected parameters. We also applied our approach to a regression task and show that our approach improves out-of-sample accuracy. Results from this study will inform how we interface with the physical reservoir in future work, and we will use these methods to continue to optimize other aspects of the physical implementation of this system as a computational reservoir.

  Voxel-based soft robots (VSRs) are a type of modular robots composed by interconnected soft and deformable blocks, i.e., voxels. Thanks to the softness of their bodies, VSRs may exhibit rich dynamic behaviors. One open question is what type of neural controller is most suitable for a given morphology and sensory apparatus in a given environment. One observation is that artificial neural networks with state may be able to cope with the dynamical nature of VSR bodies and their morphological computation. In this work, we consider four types of controllers, i.e., multilayer perceptrons (MLPs, stateless), recurrent neural networks (RNNs), spiking neural networks (SNNs) without homeostasis, and SNNs with homeostasis. We consider three robot morphologies tested for locomotion, where each morphology is investigated in simulation with three different types and number of sensors. Neural network controllers are optimized with neuroevolution, and the experimental results are compared in terms of effectiveness, efficiency, and generalization ability. In addition, we analyze the resulting behavior of the robots systematically. Our results show that RNNs are typically more effective while MLPs are often the weakest controllers, particularly for robots with few sensors. However, SNNs are more capable in terms of generalization and the mechanism of homeostasis is often beneficial. Finally, we show that RNNs and SNNs with homeostasis produce a more wide variety of behaviors.

  This article discusses the use of different representations of technology to expose, inform and engage participants taking part in co-creation activities. In our project, the participants co-create an activity to support the learning of cultural heritage. We build our research on the “design choices framework”, which provides a convenient structure for co-creation projects, but doesn’t address the role of technology in such projects. We discuss the benefits of adding a technology choice addressing how to enhance co-creation processes and improve the utility of the framework. By representing technology through, e.g., images, demos, and prototypes, appropriately in different stages of our co-creation project, we see a clear, positive impact.
