Atmospheric electricity in Hessdalen valley, Norway.

At fair weather conditions, atmospheric electricity of interesting magnitudes has been observed in Hessdalen, Norway. In this area, transient luminous phenomena have been observed in the low atmosphere for several decades. Light balls of different shapes and color, with a life time from seconds up to two hours have been reported. Electrical field mills have been utilized to measure the static electrical field in the low atmosphere at two mountain tops, Skarvan at an altitude of 975 m and Finså at 1040 m. These mountains are spaced 5.5 km apart along a north-south axis. Data from September 2017 show a buildup of static charge of more than 15kV/m under fair weather conditions while the voltage difference between the
two mountain tops exceed 20kV/m. In this area, NGU, the national institution for the study of bedrock, mineral resources, surficial deposits and groundwater, warns for high levels of Radon. Data from September 2017 shows that the radioactivity at Finså mountain increases when the electric field decrease to -5kV/m, while radioactivity levels at Skarvan stays unchanged at low level despite of the increase to over 15kV/m. Just before, at 23:44, a light is seen from Finså towards south which lasts for 8 minutes. The light emerges in a desolated area and gives a continuous optical spectrum, making it a possible observation of the Hessdalen phenomena. Observation area is marked yellow in the map.

The energy consumption for heating and cooling of buildings increases every year. Improved t material technology can help reducing the energy consumption needed to keep a comfortable indoor temperature. By integrating microencapsulated phase change materials (MPCM), which has a very high energy storage capacity within the phase transition temperature, the energy storage capacity of concrete can be significantly improved. This will facilitate improved passive building technology with reduced the energy consumption.
Geopolymer concrete (GPC) is synthesized by alkali activation of aluminosilicate materials in amorphous form (industrial waste). Geopolymer concrete is much more environmentally friendly than Portland cement concrete, which has a negative effect on the environment due to emission of huge amounts of CO2. Therefore, the integration of MPCM to GPC provides a promising environmentally friendly material with a high energy storage capacity. However, knowledge regarding the effect of MPCM on the thermal and mechanical properties of geopolymer concrete is very limited.
In this study, high thermal energy storage capacity materials were fabricated by mixing MPCM into geopolymer concrete (GPC). The effect of different type and concentration of MPCM on improving the thermal properties of GPC has been examined. Furthermore, the negative effect on the compressive strength of geopolymer concrete received special attention. Optimizing the effect of MPCM on geopolymer concrete to improve thermal properties and maintain the compressive strength of the geopolymer concrete at an acceptable level for building application is the main target of this study.

Optical luminosity of the transient luminous phenomena in Hessdalen, Norway.

Transient luminous phenomena has been observed in the low atmosphere over Hessdalen valley for several decades, first report is claimed to be 200 years old. The area is scattered with old copper, zinc, sulphur and iron mines. The river Hesja divides the valley, running south to north. The river descends from 800 m altitude to 600m. In the middle of the valley, an old copper and sulphur mine feeds the river with its acidic sulphur pollution. Eyewitnesses have reported lights emerging from the river, but most reports are of lights suddenly emerging in low altitudes over the valley, 1000m – 2000m altitude. Common colours are white, yellow, orange and blue. Green is absent. The optical spectrum of the white lights has been obtained several times, indicating a continuous spectrum. The luminosity of the Hessdalen lights has been debated, some speculating that the phenomenon´s radiant power reaches up to 1MW. A more moderate calculation done by Teodorani in 2004 suggests 19KW. The cause of the huge difference is du to uncertainty in establishing correct distance to the phenomenon. Recent discoveries done by this team, indicates that the radiant power is usually much lower. For the first time in Hessdalen, pictures with optical spectrums was obtained at a distance not more than 300m. Two similar observations were done from the same position, indicating a possible birthplace. Atmospheric data and spectrum analysis was also coinciding. Data from this short distance observation will be presented.

Magnetic influence on the unidentified luminous phenomena in Hessdalen, Norway.

Unidentified luminous phenomena have been observed in the low atmosphere over the Hessdalen valley for decades. First scientific investigation was done by E.Strand in 1984, where spiral movements of lights was recorded. The Science Camp program has conducted yearly field investigations since 2002 and has confirmed the existence of this spiral-behavior. (http://sciencecamp.no) Such behavior has also been documented in Alabama, USA. In September 2015 spiral like movement of lights was observed together
with the more common spherical lights. This spiral movement indicates the presence of low atmospheric charged matter, moving in a magnetic field. A geological survey in 2014 reviled the presence of strong magnetic anomalies. The valley contains several abandoned copper mines containing Chalcopyrite and Magnetite. The Magnetite was not useful in the copper production, and left in heaps around the valley unused. This may contribute to the magnetic anomalies in the valley.

Degradation of Alginate by Riboflavin Photosensitizer.

Purpose: The possibility of using photosensitized degradation of biopolmers in order to develop a light activated drug delivery system was investigated. Riboflavin was added to solutions of alginate and the viscosity of the samples was measured as a function of irradiation time. Various quenchers and scavengers were added to the system in order to obtain information on the degradation process. Methods: The alginate samples were exposed to a xenon lamp (1.8kW) equipped with a glass filter transmitting light corresponding to exposure behind window glass (cut-off ~310nm). Changes in sample viscosity was determined by use of a Bohlin rheometer. Chemical- and/or conformational changes in the alginate structure were characterized by light scattering methods. The absorbance and fluorescence spectra of the samples were recorded to detect possible interactions between the reactants and alginate and to follow the conversion of riboflavin into lumichrome. The effect of various scavengers and quenchers on the photosensitized viscosity change was determined. Results: The decrease in viscosity was about 5% and 38% in the absence and presence of sensitizer (riboflavin) respectively after 30 minutes exposure. The main part of the viscosity change did however take place during the initial five minutes of irradiation. This corresponds to the conversion of riboflavin into lumichrome in this system. A combination of glutathion (free radical scavenger) and sodium azid (singlet oxygen quencher) had a strongly retarding effect on the decrease in viscosity when added to the system in the presence of riboflavin. The photosensitized loss of viscosity seems to be related to a combination of polymer degradation and structural changes. Conclusion: The molecular weight and structure of alginate can be strongly affected by light in the presence of a sensitizer. The effect of riboflavin on alginate is most likely due to the formation of singlet oxygen and free radicals resulting from the photodegradation of riboflavin to lumichrome. This demonstrates that photosensitized degradation of alginate has a potential in the design of light activated biopolymer systems. Other sensitizers are now under evaluation in order to optimize the reaction.
