The IRG Symposium 2020

The IRG symposium linked stakeholders for a many-faceted exploration of emergence and how what takes place inside our head plays a critical role in forming our future. The Symposium is supported by the Lighthouse workshop on environment, tourism and innovation and part of Forskningsdagene 2020 ved HiØ

Part 1: Emergence, complexities and spaces

The concept of emergence is based on the idea that the future is not yet decided, it is open to being influenced by individuals, teams and organisations. At some point all physical things and systems existed as ideas inside individuals minds, so what role does the brain play in forming the future? What role does creativity, imagination and beliefs play in shaping outcomes? What can we learn from mindsets that might help us create technologies, systems and a society that we want to experience in the future?

Matt started in complexities using three thought-experiments before discussing emergence from a theory of science perspective. 

Søren followed up linking emergence closer to actor-network theory and action nets introducing spaces and networks of spaces. 

Both talks sparked discussions linking own articles and literature in discussions on complexities, emergence, spaces, framing innovation, staging spaces, mobilising, design thinking, translating and experimenting. 

Good discussions in a hybrid symposium with participants on location and on zoom. 


Part 2: Paper abstracts and outlines for discussions

Experimentation, prototyping, design thinking, spaces took and the green shift formed the central network of how to bring the discussions to research. Both Greenbiz (the big Interreg project with Aarhus and Chalmers) and Vikenakademiet were identified as interesting arenas for exploring emergence in networks of space using design thinking.
