Hydrogels for saltwater/freshwater energy production

Production of energy based on saltwater/fresh water has mainly been focused on utilization of membrane technology to gain energy from the osmotic pressure differences between salt and fresh water. However, the membrane technology has a number of challenges that makes it difficult to produce energy that is cheap enough to compete on the open market. In this project, we will examine the possibilities of utilizing the swelling/de-swelling properties of hydrogels to produce energy from salt and fresh water. There are currently one PhD-student working on this project.
