Strengthening our capacity on sustainable development

We welcome Dr Cristina Milani. We see this as one step in the ongoing process of strengthening the teaching and research capacity in the group for the benefit for our students and our regional partners.

Cristina Milani is a marine biologist and zoologist from Italy. She lived in Greece for many years and worked at a fisheries research institute with projects on marine environmental protection and anthropic impacts, especially fishing, on the marine environment. She was also a general partner in a private company that worked in marine research, environmental education and environmental awareness campaigns. She has completed a PhD in Marine Biology at the University of Malta on the conflicts between the local dolphin populations and coastal fishery in an area of ​​the North Aegean Sea, proposing the creation of marine protected areas in rotation, which was particularly suited to the characteristics of the area. She has also completed a Master in Environmental Education with a focus on marine biology, therefore she has experience in communicating science to the general public, through lectures, seminars, photographic exhibitions, production of videos and documentaries, etc. A few years ago she received certificates for visual and acoustic monitoring, and mitigation of impact on marine mammals and protected species.

In June 2018, she moved to Norway and worked in sustainable and environmental tourism. In the summer she worked in Andenes, Vesterålen, where she was a guide for whale watching, whale museum and lighthouse. In the winter, she worked as a Northern Lights guide in Tromsø and she was responsible for training and for preparing guidelines  for the new northern lights guides.

She moved to Fredrikstad / Hvaler in October 2020, and recently began collaborating with HiØ in sustainable innovation and related projects. She is concerned with environmental protection and sustainable development.
