  Social robots are increasingly penetrating our daily lives. They are used in various domains, such as healthcare, education, business, industry, and culture. However, introducing this technology for use in conventional environments is not trivial. For users to accept social robots, a positive user experience is vital, and it should be considered as a critical part of the robots’ development process. This may potentially lead to excessive use of social robots and strengthen their diffusion in society. The goal of this study is to summarize the extant literature that is focused on user experience in social robots, and to identify the challenges and benefits of UX evaluation in social robots. To achieve this goal, the authors carried out a systematic literature review that relies on PRISMA guidelines. Our findings revealed that the most common methods to evaluate UX in social robots are questionnaires and interviews. UX evaluations were found out to be beneficial in providing early feedback and consequently in handling errors at an early stage. However, despite the importance of UX in social robots, robot developers often neglect to set UX goals due to lack of knowledge or lack of time. This study emphasizes the need for robot developers to acquire the required theoretical and practical knowledge on how to perform a successful UX evaluation.

  This paper presents a story on how patients with Mild Acquired Cognitive Impairment(s) (MACI) could be actively involved in Participatory Design (PD) sessions. A detailed description of what mild acquired cognitive impairments entitles is given, followed by an overview of PD and how it might be relevant in the design of new Information and Communication Technology (ICT) solutions for this user group. The story on how we applied the method is presented as a description and reflection by the authors involved in redesigning the layout of a document in a rehabilitation hospital. The paper aims to attract the attention of PD practitioners to the MACI user group and trigger discussion and questions about PD techniques for patients with MACI.

  The elderly in the future will use smart house technology, sensors, and robots to stay at home longer. Privacy at home for these elderly is important. In this exploratory paper, we examine different understandings of privacy and use Palen and Dourish’s framework to look at the negotiation of privacy along boundaries between a human at home, the robot, and its sensors. We select three dilemmas: turning sensors on and off, the robot seeing through walls, and machine learning. We discuss these dilemmas and also discuss ways the robot can help make the elderly more aware of privacy issues and to build trust.

  The point of departure for this article is the interdisciplinary research project RHYME (rhyme.no), which involves computing and musical components embedded in everyday objects, with the aim of improving the quality of life for children with special needs, their families and caretakers (Cappelen & Andersson, 2011). In RHYME, participation is apparent in many respects, including but not limited to the project’s political assignment, its theoretical foundation, and the practical implementation of user participation in the action research. The authors of this article are three researchers in the RHYME project—two represent the discipline of informatics and one represents music and health. Before we explore the phenomenon of participation within the RHYME project over the course of this chapter, the informatics researchers Herstad and Holone and the music and health researcher Stensæth will outline the concept of participation within their respective fields. We will however begin with a short presentation of RHYME. The last part of this article derives directly from empirical data generated through RHYME, and in the concluding discussion we will suggest future possibilities for exchange between informatics and the field of music and health. Because our fields seldom cooperate in research, we hope that our comments will be relevant to other interdisciplinary projects. We will specifically address the following research questions: How is participation described in the disciplines of informatics and music and health, and what does participation imply in the RHYME project? To proceed from a common ground of understanding, we will be guided by the following working questions: How does the focus on user participation in the RHYME prototype evaluations differ for informatics and health and music researchers? With regard to participation, what can the fields of music and health and informatics learn from one another?

  In our FoxHunt game, virtual foxes are chased on a playground. Foxes and hunters are rendered on a map displayed on GPS-enabled mobile phones. We collected data from three field tests, totalling 130 participants. Approximately half of the players were provided with positions and scores for the other hunters. In the rest of the games, only the foxes and the players' own avatars were rendered. Providing co-player information did not have a direct impact on gaming scores. However, it increased the reported fun factor.

  Fun in gaming is a difficult, however paramount, topic. Some games are fun, some are not. Some games are ancient and common to both man and animals, for instance Chase-and-Catch (C&C). These games are physically intensive, short in duration, and confined to a specific area. In our research we explore transitions from traditional playground C&C games to their digital counterparts. The rationale is simple; modest augmentations of old-fashioned gaming concepts might prove to be a rewarding avenue for designing successful location-based games. We present a straightforward C&C game, FoxHunt, where location-aware mobile phones are used for hunting virtual foxes. Based on field studies with a total of 220 players, we present and discuss evidence of a very high fun factor, independent of age, gender, playing conditions, and inclination towards sports and physical exercise. We argue that C&C games deserve to be treated as a separate genre within mobile, location-aware gaming.

  Accessibility maps are valuable tools for people with mobility problems navigating in the urban landscape, in particular for first time visitors. However, the costs of establishing and maintaining such maps prohibit widespread use. Moreover, smartphones, GPS positioning and a growing number of open geospatial tools and technology are becoming commodities. Letting users create and augment geospatial data is opening up for a host of novel user generated geospatial services. Maps, or more precisely, the geospatial data they depict, might for instance be used for route planning. For pedestrians, not to say people with mobility problems, such tools are scarce. In this paper, we explore the combination of accessibility maps and route planning for people with mobility problems. To overcome the cost problems of accessibility surveys, we propose a novel concept, OurWay, which allows the users to annotate the accessibility of their surroundings.This user generated content provides a basis for computing satisfactory routes, from one location to another, matching the user's preferences and needs. We present findings from two experiments, which bear evidence of the validity of the concept, and discuss its potential as a tool for surveying and route planning.

  Inspired by systems based on user generated content, we have developed a prototype named OurWay, a collabora- tive route planning system utilizing user feedback (rating of route segments) to provide quality routes adapted to the users abilities and needs. We report from an indoor exper- iment where users in wheelchairs solved navigational tasks with our prototype. Log data, observations, and interviews serve as a basis for discussing the feasibility of the Our- Way concept. We find that OurWay yields better routes for all users with aggregated route segment ratings produced throughout the experiment. However, ratings were largely produced by each individual to accomplish a selfish goal, namely that of solving a navigational task. In this respect, rating can be seen as a by-product of use, rather than as an intentional action on behalf of a community.

  Route planning has over the few past years become common in the context of driving cars and other vehicles. However, with the advent of powerful mobile devices, such as smart-phones, systems helping pedestrians finding their way in complex urban environments have emerged. We present a prototype system for mobile pedestrian navigation, called OurWay, based on user generated maps and collaborative annotations of network segments. We are particularly concerned with users with various permanent or temporary disabilities, like wheelchair users, or parents pushing baby strollers. By letting users rate the accessibility of locations, the system will compute bespoke routes matching their abilities and preferences. We explore the potential of the concept through a combination of field work and lab trials, using real life data. We also demonstrate that collaboratively collected geodata has promising properties as a foundation for innovative geospatial applications. Initial results indicate that few user annotations are needed to produce good routes.

  Patient empowerment is a concept that has found an extensive discussion in health care. It is of significant interest, especially now when the number of people living with chronic diseases has increased. However, there is a stigma associated with being a patient, and contributing to empowerment becomes more challenging. In this paper, we present an empirical study of the cognitive rehabilitation process. We root the case analysis in Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) research field and further reflect on patient empowerment concept. Through our reflections, we contribute to the discussion of patient empowerment by highlighting some of the work structures that need to be in place in healthcare to make possible patient empowerment. Moreover, we contribute back to CSCW through a situated discourse of concepts in the context of rehabilitation care model. Rendering publicly visible the activities and facilitating the overseeing of events and activities, both in the level of the overall treatment as well as the micro-interactions among health care professionals and patients, are found relevant in building awareness among parts and leading to empowerment.

  The Information Systems Research Seminar in Scandinavia (IRIS) is of an annual meeting of Information Systems (IS) researchers. The IRIS seminar distinguishes itself as the oldest IS seminar in the world, as it has been established in 1978. IRIS is organised by the IRIS Association, the Scandinavian Chapter of the Association for Information Systems (AIS). The articles of this fifth issue of the IRIS Selected Papers of the Information Systems Research Seminar in Scandinavia were originally proposed by the working group chairs (senior IS researchers). The selected papers have an acceptance rate of 25% of the original submissions. All of the papers of the IRIS seminar have gone through a peer review process.

  Accessibility maps are valuable tools for people with mobility problems navigating in the urban landscape, in particular for first time visitors. However, the costs of establishing and maintaining such maps prohibit widespread use. Moreover, smartphones, GPS positioning and a growing number of open geospatial tools and technology are becoming commodities. Letting users create and augment geospatial data is opening up for a host of novel user generated geospatial services. Maps, or more precisely, the geospatial data they depict, might for instance be used for route planning. For pedestrians, not to say people with mobility problems, such tools are scarce. In this paper, we explore the combination of accessibility maps and route planning for people with mobility problems. To overcome the cost problems of accessibility surveys, we propose a novel concept, OurWay, which allows the users to annotate the accessibility of their surroundings. This user generated content provides a basis for computing satisfactory routes, from one location to another, matching the user's preferences and needs. We present findings from two experiments, which bear evidence of the validity of the concept, and discuss its potential as a tool for surveying and route planning.

  Inspired by systems based on user generated content, we have developed a prototype named OurWay, a collabora- tive route planning system utilizing user feedback (rating of route segments) to provide quality routes adapted to the users abilities and needs. We report from an indoor exper- iment where users in wheelchairs solved navigational tasks with our prototype. Log data, observations, and interviews serve as a basis for discussing the feasibility of the Our- Way concept. We find that OurWay yields better routes for all users with aggregated route segment ratings produced throughout the experiment. However, ratings were largely produced by each individual to accomplish a selfish goal, namely that of solving a navigational task. In this respect, rating can be seen as a by-product of use, rather than as an intentional action on behalf of a community.

In this position paper we present three on-going projects addressing mobile user collaboration and participation, where the target groups range from physically disabled persons to neighborhood citizens. We then discuss some selected challenges in mobile eParticipation, regarding both ICT research and policy and community issues.

  Route planning has over the few past years become common in the context of driving cars and other vehicles. However, with the advent of powerful mobile devices, such as smart-phones, systems helping pedestrians finding their way in complex urban environments have emerged. We present a prototype system for mobile non-vehicle navigation, called OurWay, based on user generated maps from the OpenStreetMap project, and collaborative annotations of network segments. We are particularly concerned with users with various permanent or temporary disabilities, like wheelchair users, or parents pushing baby strollers. By letting users rate the accessibility of locations, the system will compute bespoke routes matching their abilities and preferences. We explore the potential of the concept through a combination of field work and lab trials, using real life data. We also demonstrate that collaboratively collected geodata has promising properties as a foundation for innovative geospatial applications. Initial results indicate that few user annotations are needed to produce good routes.
