PHD Project : Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) based Inspection for Future Resilient Bridges: Image Segmentation & Resilience Assessment
The predominant purpose of this PhD project is to develop models and algorithms for dynamic reliability, risk and resilience assessment of the bridges based on the monitoring, diagnosis & prognosis of potential failures at their early stages as possible. Therefore, this study will examine the application of a new technology such as Unmanned Ariel Vehicles (UAVs) for collecting images, assessing the bridge operational state, and employing drones for contingency plan, for enhancing the resilience of the bridge. The focus also will be to assess the applicability of state-of-the-art image processing and deep/machine learning techniques and methods (such as Convolutional Neural Networks) for the automatic per-pixel segmentation and classification of bridge failures via the integration of UAVs images and the state-of-the-art image processing and deep/machine learning techniques and methods. The study will culminate in a report detailing the advantages and challenges of using UAVs for bridge inspection, an analysis on current UAV technologies as they relate to bridge inspection, and an analysis describing how current and future technology fit within the National Bridge Inspection Standards.
