Project title: “Screen-time” revisited, young peoples digital habits in daily life.
Short summary
Debates concerning young people screen-time and social life emerged as soon as most homes got television, and a few decades later computers. Building on existing research in this area my focus will be on how young people with extensive “screen-time” use computers in different ways in their daily life. Main focus will be young people who are not in education or work, NEETs and how NAVs project “Snuplassen” will affect their daily life and plans. The stereotype of NEETs today as described by NAV-employees claim they “just sit in front of the screen all day”, but we don’t know if this is true or if this is just a convenient answer when asked what they do. Lots of people sit in front of a screen all day, in fact all office-based jobs use screens in most of their work. How can NEETs screen-experiences be described in more detail? How do they spend their days, and how do they actually use the different “screens” or digital devices? Do they connect with others, and if so, who and how? Looking into the exact use, what skills they develop, what they experience during their screen-time, their communication habits, social networks, connections and friendships on and off-screen and to what extent can this inhibit or advance transition to education or work?
