This paper presents insights from four years of interdisciplinary discussions and analysis focusing on the complex and multidimensional character of the relationship between culture and ethics. Our approach to culture is one which seeks to understand how values we know as cultural – that is embedded in and emergent from particular locations and groupings of people who develop shared understandings over time – are part of how groups are recognised (or denied), how knowledge is produced and understood, how people understand their position in the world and how history and change influence the boundaries between cultures and the differential valuing of cultures. Our overall claim is that cultural dynamics are embedded in all areas of cultural analysis and bioethical or ethical debate. What the paper produces is a case for seeing culture as a vital component to how we debate science and ethics and indicates several ways this can be done analytically and methodologically. The value of the interdisciplinary analyses captured in the domains we discuss is that they draw out the interrelated nature of the practices associated with „culture‟, „ethics‟ and „science‟. Drawing out such interrelationships is an important stage in thinking through the questions of justice, rights and power, that each of us in our different fields see as vital to our research practice. We share a conviction of the need for inter-/trans-disciplinary evaluations of our own disciplines, in order to make visible the culture of Dominant research that resist forms of analysis that question how things are done and why. We also recognise the need to constantly question our own cultural positionings within our disciplines and our society and how we are located within power relations from which we may receive benefit.

Doble perspektiv, mytopoeter og samisk kulturlandskap. En homage til Louise Bäckman, Sverre Fjellheim, Nils-Aslak Valkeapää og Ailo Gaup. Vi lever våre liv mellom det faktiske og det mulige. For at noe skal bli til må det skapes. For at noe skal bli til for oss må det erfares, eller bli vist oss av noen. Språk og fortellinger hører sammen med levd liv. Språk og fortellinger finnes på et sted og hører til en sosial sammenheng i en tid. Det som er utenfor det man har satt ord på og utviklet begreper for er enda ikke erkjent. I språket og fortellingene finns også det og de som er fordømt, forvist til bakgater, eller glemt. I språket finns også dyrebare skatter som er skjult, eller enda ikke allment kjent. Dobbelt perspektiv handler om parallelle fortellinger og språk knyttet til urfolk. De samiske forskerne Louise Bäckman og Sverre Fjellheim har i sine arbeider med samisk historie jobbet fram begrepene mytopoet (Bäckman) og samisk kulturlandskap (Fjellheim). Begrepene er utviklet mot bakgrunn av samisk liv og historie. Begrepene fremmer perspektiver på religion og natur som har betydning for oss alle. Nils-Aslak Valkeapää var den første samiske forfatteren som fikk Nordisk Råds Litteraturpris (1991). Ailo Gaup er forfatteren som gjennom boken Sjamansonen ble den offentlige (ny-)sjamanismens forfatter i Norden. Begge har betydelse for både et samisk og et ikke samisk publikum. Begge har hatt betydning for individers hverdag, glede og helse, og for en offentlig samtale om forfatterskapenes innehold. De to forfatterne utgår fra myter, levevis og erfaringer som er stedegne, bundet til språk og begreper i det samiske folkets historie. Fortellingene deres utgår fra livet selv og de liv og muligheter som de stedegne kunnskapene og erfaringene gjør tilgjengelig. Foredraget er en refleksjon over fire samiske kultur- og kunnskapsformidleres betydning for festivalens tema.

How Folklore May Contribute to Brain Research and Neuroscience? The International Brain Initiative (IBI) has established a new cross-cultural working group (WG). The overall aim of the WG is to bring in non-westernized strategies and ways of knowing and learning to ensure inclusive and global neuroscience. To include or merge specific institutions, communities and traditions that are themselves subject to organic processes is productive. Though merging the fields of medicine, in particular brain research, with culture, has a well-known and controversial past. This presentation discusses the questions why and how to approach culture as an empirical field, analytical strategy, and theoretical perspective relevant for present neuroscience.

Presentation of Knowledge Landscapes. Frame for the presentation: The Building Interdisciplinary Analysis and Capacity: The UoYSTS Roundtable Workshop held on developing interdisciplinary research in STS This Workshop, which was supported by the University of York’s Research Office, brought together members of the University of York Science, Technology and Society (UoYSTS) Roundtable which was established in 2015, with doctoral students and staff on the White Rose Science and Technology Studies Pathway. In addition, members of a European network, ‘Navigating Knowledge Landscapes’ related to the use of social media attended. Guests from senior university staff were also invited, as were regional members of the Association for Studies In Innovation Science and Technology (AsSIST-UK http://assist-uk.com/). Presentation: The on-line web as an arena for individual strong voices. On personal narratives, addiction and resistance This presentation focuses on personal psychosocial narratives told by known and unknown individuals, under their full name and in traditional news media with, i.e. an editorial policy and investigating journalism as its prime brand. The presentation start of by introduce this particular genre and relate it to the CMJ discussion on Knowledge Landscapes (KL). In this presentation it has been of interest that the theme discussed varies immensely, and can focus on for example addiction, or depression, or suicide attempts, or suicide committed by someone close to the narrator. Some of these stories will be presented and the argument is that they, as a whole, constitute a specific genre in present digital society. The aim of the presentation is to further discuss the personal narrative as an agent, how it is transported on-line and of-line, and its relation, or lack of relation, to established KL fields. This part will be presented in the form of suggested communication models, meant to generate discussion and thus further conceptual clarification. An underlying ambition is to elaborate on two theoretically argued for understandings of narratives and texts in present society. In part, discourse analysis will be discussed, and the discussion is pushed by the question “is discourse analysis the best way to understand these particular psychosocial narratives?” In part phenomenology will be discussed, though for a different reason. Phenomenology is a key theoretical starting point in health research using qualitative methodologies (interviews in particular). Thus narratives/interviews analysed from a phenomenological point of view will usually limit its explanatory ambition to the individual’s feelings and subjective perspective. This as if the narrative told does not carry knowledge. Thus three things will be interrelated in the presentation and discussed in relation to concrete examples of personal psychosocial narratives presented in traditional news media: • Is it analytically helpful and theoretically motivated to define personal psychosocial narratives in traditional news media a genre? • How to we include these particular personal health narratives in models of communication in present digital society? • How do our theoretical understanding and use of discourse analysis and phenomenology affect our understanding of the content and function of these particular health narratives?
