SYKAD is about effectiveness and clinical outcomes of decentralized acute healthcare services versus hospital- a randomized controlled trial. The results will give important information about different acute healthcare service-levels. This knowledge is important for guiding future organization of healthcare services both nationally and internationally, as well as in quality improvement initiatives. Findings from the study will support physicians who refer patients to different services in their decision-making process. Moreover, findings may contribute to a public trust in the quality and safety of healthcare services provided.

The project is a collaboration between Østfold University College and Østfold Hospital Trust, the National Association for Heart and Lung Diseases (LHL), the University of Oslo (UIO), and all the municipalities in Østfold. In addition, the study involves participants from Ål municipality, and the Universities in Lund and Umeå. Data collection in the project started autumn 2019, with Vivian Nystrøm as a PhD student employed at Østfold University College, Department  of Health and Welfare, and enrolled to the PhD program at UiO, Institute of Health and Society.

The project is funded by Extrastiftelsen (employment of Vivian Nystrøm), and from the County Governor in Østfold (study nurses).
