Fabulous Films - Blood Diamond

The aim of this lesson is to use the film Blood Diamond to engage the pupils in a discussion centred around many important global issues.

Short Description

The aim of this lesson is to use the film Blood Diamond to engage the pupils in a discussion centred around many important global issues. They will explain, explore and elaborate on key topics. They will also analyse and reflect to a high degree.

They will use three of the basic skills (grunnleggende ferdigheter): å kunne uttrykke seg muntlig, å kunne bruke digitalt verktøy, å kunne skrive.

Filmen dekkjer fleire tema som ein kan diskutere innanfor hovudområda i den generelle læreplanen:Det meiningssøkjande menneske, kulturarv og identitet (s. 2) og Det integrerte menneske (s. 8).

Teaching Objectives

This plan should enable the students to:

  • achieve knowledge about and show a good understanding of illegal trade, slavery, child soldiers as well as colonial and modern Africa
  • demonstrate increased ability to listen, speak, elaborate and discuss a film and its content
  • understand teamwork skills
  • increase their general and program related vocabulary

Debriefing and Assessment

If working on Google docs, then the groups could assess each other’s texts and/or videos. Provide them with an assessment form for skriftlig/muntlig vurdering (see resources).

Use a consensus mat sheet (see Resources) and ask each person to write down the most important things they have learnt from watching the film, including words and terms, and then agree on what should be written in the centre box to be shared with the rest of the class.

Self assessment. Give the pupils a sheet of paper with a Continuum Value line:'I learnt a lot' in one end, 'I didn't learn much' in the other. Ask the pupils to put a cross on the line reflecting their opinion, and then ask them to stand and form themselves physically, in a line according to where they have placed their cross on the paper. Each pupil should then talk to the two pupils either side of them and give reasons for their choice. The line can be bent or formed into a circle so that the pupil who feels that he/she learnt the least stands next  to the pupil who feels that he/she learnt the most.

Written work can be handed in and assessed by the teacher too.

Plan of Lessons

Prefilm activity

Activate pupils’ previous knowledge. Have pairs and, eventually the whole class, discuss certain themes to prepare them for the film.

Possible activities:

  • Find out how much pupils know about illegal trading. What type of items are traded illegally on an international scale?
  • Ask pupils what they know about colonial and modern day Africa.
  • Ask pupils what they know about slavery and child soldiers.
  • Ask if any of them have ever thought about being a journalist and more generally about the role the media play in the world.

Film - watch together

Possible postfilm activities:

  1. Film discussions e.g. themes, climax, point of view, setting, characters, denouement, conclusion (see ndla link in resources).
  2. Posters
    1. Hang name posters on the classroom walls. Ask pupils to stand in front of, for example, their favourite character, most hated character, bravest character etc. Ask them to either give a written, or an oral account of the character.

If there is more than one pupil at the poster they can discuss and agree on a final statement.

    2. Hang up the posters with quotes from the film on (see resources). Ask the pupils to read them all and then stand in front of their favourite. Have them explain orally or in writing why they chose this quote and what it means.
  3. Quotes
There are some fantastic quotes from the film that allow the pupils to exercise their reflection skills. Select and print out some of them (see resources) and have the pupils sit in pairs. They can practise reading the quotes out to each other, focussing on intonation and pronunciation, or they can read out the quotes and explain what it means. Do they agree? Can they remember which scene in the film the quote comes from?
  4. Film Review
The pupils could write a film review (see resources)
  5. Media
Ask the pupils to put themselves in Maddy’s shoes and write an article for a newspaper, or they could do a TV news report on video.
  6. Resources
Use the Prezi and Target’s resources.
