Health centers and General Practitioner

There is no health centre for students at Østfold University College and students may therefore consult any public general practitioner within normal opening hours.

Students who are members of the Norwegian National Insurance Scheme are assigned a GP and should contact the corresponding medical centre for an appointment. For more information about your rights to a doctor, see here.

Outside normal opening hours, you can also consult the public emergency medical service (‘legevakt’). Call 116 117 to get in contact with the emergency medical service in Halden or Fredrikstad.

For more information about your health rights as a foreigner in Norway, see here.

Student counselling

Are you struggling with homesickness, depression, problems in close relationships, low motivation or just need to talk to somebody? The Student Welfare Organisation in Østfold (SiØ) offers all students individual counselling and short-term therapy, and can provide health care information on sexually transmitted diseases, contraception, pregnancy, abortion and more. Book an appointment with one of SiØ’s counsellors. The service is free for all students at Østfold University College.

Reimbursement of health care costs

The Norwegian National Insurance Scheme (and the European Health Insurance Card) covers necessary health care, except for a nominal fee that you have to pay yourself.

For registered students, all nominal fees exceeding NOK 300 will be reimbursed at The Student Welfare Organisation in Østfold’s (SiØ) office upon presentation of receipts/documentation from your doctor, psychologist, chiropractor or physiotherapist. These must include your name and the dates of consultations. Only original receipts will be accepted. SiØ will not cover expenses for the few private doctors/clinics that are not included in the scheme.

If you are not covered by the Norwegian National Insurance Scheme and have to pay full costs for health care, you can contact the appropriate public/private insurance office in your home country to seek reimbursement.
