Work permit

If you are granted a study permit, you are automatically also granted permission to work part-time.

EU/EEA students: You do not need a work permit and can start working straight away, but you must register with the police upon arrival in Norway.

Non-EU/EEA: If you are granted a study permit, you are automatically also granted permission to work part-time for up to 20 hours per week in addition to your studies, and full-time during holidays. Please note that when you apply to renew your study permit, your work permit is not automatically renewed. You must document satisfactory progress (progress report) in your studies in order to continue to work for up to 20 hours per week.

Tax deduction cards

When working in Norway, you must have a tax deduction card.To apply for a tax card, you must meet in person at the tax administration office:

You will need to bring the following documents:

  • A completed application form (RF-1209 Application for a tax deduction card for foreign citizens).
  • Your passport
  • Your residence permit (Non EU/EEA)/registration certificate (EU/EEA)
  • Your employment contract or written offer of employment.
  • Your Norwegian national identity number (more than 6 months)/D-number (less than 6 months). If you do not have a national identity number or D-number, you can still apply for a tax deduction card.
