Recommended requirements

The course builds on SFE11118 English grammar and phonetics I (10 ECTS credits), or equivalent.

Lecture Semester

  • One-year English programme: 2nd semester (spring).

  • Bachelor's Programme in Languages with English as one of the chosen languages: 2nd or 4th semester (spring).

Content

The students receive further instruction in phonetics and intonation, with an emphasis on practical skills, and a continuation of the language's grammatical structure. In phonetics, students continue working on transcriptions and learn to recognize, describe, and apply intonation. Practical exercises are included. The focus is on two variants of English: Received Pronunciation (British English) and American English. Examples of key grammar topics include the analysis of main clauses and subordinate clauses, verb forms, and the relationship between grammar and text. The purpose is, among other things, to demonstrate the connection between grammatical form and meaning. Comparisons are made with Norwegian and other languages to increase awareness of grammatical and phonetic similarities and differences between various languages.

Forms of teaching and learning

Teaching is provided through lectures, seminars, group sessions, and other forms of activities. A learning platform is used for information distribution.

Teaching and guidance take place using digital collaboration tools.

A functioning webcam and microphone are required for participation in online classes.

Workload

Approx. 280 hours.

Coursework requirements - conditions for taking the exam

  • Two individual assignments on phonetics and grammar must be handed in by the given deadline; further details are given in the term plan issued in Canvas at the start of the semester. Students are given two formal attempts to gain a passing mark on any assignment.

Required coursework must be approved before the student can sit for the exam.

Examination

Individual oral exam, approx. 45 minutes.

The oral exam contains two parts, one dealing with grammar and the other with phonetics. Students must pass both parts of the exam to be awarded a grade in the course.

No aids are permitted.

Grading scale A-F.

Examiners

One external and one internal examiner or two internal examiners.
