SFF21212 Translation for specific purposes: theory and practice (Autumn 2024)

The student's learning outcomes after completing the course

Knowledge:

The student

• has knowledge of translation theory and the use of reference materials.
• has insight into various text types and genres, and translation as a process and product within a communication framework.

 

Skills:

The student

• can recognize various genres and types of texts, and can use Norwegian and French to convey the message in the texts appropriately.
• has developed a critical attitude towards the analysis of texts at various levels (lexical, syntactic, stylistic, and considering cultural differences).
• has cultivated a critical attitude towards their own work.

 

General competence:

The student

• can use reference material and sources independently and reflectively.
• can find relevant material in various media, with the assistance of ICT, and with guidance from the instructor.
• is aware of the difference between translation as a tool for acquiring vocabulary and syntax in language learning, and translation as a profession.

Content

The students are introduced to translation theory and analysis of various genres and text types. They will compare different language structures in French and Norwegian and become aware of the techniques needed in the translation process to convey the message in the text. The students will regularly practice translation from French to Norwegian and from Norwegian to French, and develop a critical attitude towards their own and other's work.

Forms of teaching and learning

The teaching is conducted through online meetings with the possibility of individual guidance by appointment. The learning platform Canvas is used for distributing foundational documents, central study material, assignments, guidance, and other relevant information about the course. The teaching platform is used for online meetings in the form of lectures and guidance sessions. Self-study is included in the learning methods.

Workload

Approximately. 280 hours.

Coursework requirements - conditions for taking the exam

Three (3) shorter written assignments.

Required courseworks must be approved before the student can appear for the exam.

Examination

Written home examination, individual, duration of ten days.

All aids are allowed, except communication and collaboration with others on the answers.

Grading scale A-F.

Examiners

External and internal examiner or two internal examiners.
