  • One-year English programme: 1st semester (autumn).

The student's learning outcomes after completing the course

Knowledge

The student has

  • knowledge of the sound system in English, vocabulary, and the grammatical structure of the language with a focus on differences and similarities between English, Norwegian, and other languages, as well as insight into cultural conventions for language use.
  • knowledge of English as a global language.

Skills

The student can

  • use a conceptual framework to describe and analyze written and spoken English.
  • use phonemic transcription and intonation transcription.

General Competence

The student

  • has awareness of their own language use.
  • can work analytically, both independently and collaboratively with others.

Content

The student receives an introduction to phonetics and intonation, with an emphasis on practical skills, as well as an introduction to the grammatical structure of the language. In phonetics, the student learns, among other things, to use the terminology to describe and analyze English pronunciation. Practical exercises are included. The focus is on two variants of English: Received Pronunciation (British English) and American English. Examples of key grammar topics include phrase structure and sentence analysis. The purpose is, among other things, to demonstrate the connection between grammatical form and meaning. Comparisons are made with Norwegian and other languages to increase awareness of grammatical and phonetic similarities and differences among different languages.

Forms of teaching and learning

Teaching forms vary between online lectures, seminars, talks and activities. The learning platform Canvas is used to distribute information. Each student is required to keep their webcamera and microphone turned on when participating in online classes.

Workload

Approx. 280 hours.

Coursework requirements - conditions for taking the exam

  • Two individual assignments on phonetics and grammar must be handed in by the given deadline. For further details see term plan.

Required coursework must be approved before the student can sit the exam.

Examination

Individual oral exam, approx. 30 minutes.

Oral examination is conducted through digital collaboration tools online.

No aids are permitted.

Grade scale A-F.

Examiners

One external and one internal examiner or two internal examiners.
