The course offers an advanced study focusing on a selection of French-language works examined within their historical context, all of which reference periods and events that have left profound marks on the history of the 20th and 21st centuries. In their analysis of these works, students explore how literature addresses and processes the collective memory of these periods. Relevant periods include, for example, the Algerian War and World War II, among others. Emphasis is placed on narrative and storytelling techniques, as well as aesthetic choices. The course draws on well-established research in narratology as well as recent studies in memory literature.
