The course is connected to the following study programs

Mandatory course in the one-year German programme (full time and part time). Obligatory course in the 60 ECTS part of the Bachelor's Programme in Languages for students with German as one of their chosen languages.

Lecture Semester

German One-Year Programme - Full time: 2nd semester (spring), part time: 4th semester (spring). Bachelor's Programme in Languages: 2nd or 4th semester (spring).

The student's learning outcomes after completing the course

Knowledge

The student

  • has gained in-depth knowledge of the topic of his/her own choice.

  • knows how to find, evaluate, process and use relevant literature, and how to make a systematic scholarly written presentation using correct references and notes.

Skills

The student 

  • is able to write a lengthy presentation in correct German with a clear and functional structure in relation the chosen topic.

General competence

The student

  • has further developed his/her ability to gather information, assess it and structure the material. '

  • is able to formulate a topic and research questions and to use sources critically in the process of working with the chosen topic.

  • has trained critical sense and independence.

Content

The students choose a topic related to social life, culture, literature, didactics or language in the German area. They work on their assignment supervised by the course instructor. The topic for the assignment is discussed with and approved by the instructor. There is to be a preliminary presentation of the work in the course of the semester, see 'Coursework requirements'.

Forms of teaching and learning

Independent work under supervision. Library resources and other resources are to be used actively. The students will be each other's respondents during the work, see 'Coursework requirements'. Each student is required to keep their webcamera and microphone turned on when participating in online classes.

Workload

Approx. 280 hours.

Coursework requirements - conditions for taking the exam

The students present their chosen topic on the programme website. A short summary of the work is to be posted by a given deadline. Each student will be responsible for responding to two of the other students' postings.

The coursework must be approved before the final assignment can be assessed.

Examination

Individual term paper

Assessment is based on an individual assignment, The term paper is a written text document (1 ½ line spacing). The paper should contain 19.000-20.000 signs (blank spaces, footnotes and literature list included). Optional illustrations are not included.

The document is to include correct use of references and notes. Assessment takes into consideration: level of knowledge, information gathering, independence, and ability to formulate. The assignment is to be submitted by a given deadline. The students receive individual supervision.

Grading scale: A-F

Examiners

One external and one internal examiner or two internal examiners.

Conditions for resit/rescheduled exams

In the case of a new exam or re-examination a new assignment has to be submitted.

Course evaluation

Feedback from our students is vital in order for us to be able to offer the best possible courses and study programmes. The course is evaluated every semester.

The results are considered by/in teacher groups, the head of studies and the local programme committee.

Literature

In cooperation with the course instructor the students choose their own literature to be used for the work with the term paper.
