The course is connected to the following study programs

Mandatory course in the one-year German programme (full time and part time). Obligatory course in the 60 ECTS part of the Bachelor's Programme in Languages for students with German as one of their chosen languages.

Recommended requirements

The course builds on SFT11517/SFT11519 German Language I or equivalent.

Lecture Semester

German One-Year Programme - Full time: 2nd semester (spring), part time: 4th semester (spring). Bachelor's Programme in Languages: 2nd or 4th semester (spring).

The student's learning outcomes after completing the course

Knowledge

The student 

  • has  acquired knowledge of German syntax and the terminology needed to benefit from reading course literature and other general non-fictional literature.

Skills

The student

  • can account for basic features of German grammar and is able to transfer knowledge into practice by communicating correctly and functionally in writing.

  • understands authentic German texts and is able to use their knowledge for teaching.

General competence

The student

  • is familiar with language structures and grammatical terminology, and understand how to teach their language knowledge.

Content

The course comprises

a)     Grammar II: The students will enhance their knowledge of the German language system through basic features of German syntax.

b)    Written proficiency: The practical and theoretical basis of German Language I is continued with the aim of achieving a more precise, nuanced and varied language use. Free written production is a central part of the course. The ability to understand German is practiced by translating German texts into Norwegian.

Forms of teaching and learning

Instruction is given on our learning platform. The syllabus is presented here and students are expected to actively participate in discussions and other webbased activity when working with the syllabus. The students will be working with assignments and practical exercises. Projects in groups can also be part of the course, meaning that students cooperate in the writing process using e.g. wiki technology. Each student is required to keep their webcamera and microphone turned on when participating in online classes.

Workload

Approx. 280 hours.

Coursework requirements - conditions for taking the exam

Two individual assignments are submitted by given deadlines.

The assignments must be approved before the student may sit the exam.

Examination

Individual written examination (5 hours)

The candidates' knowledge of analyses and terminology related to grammar will be tested as well as their ability to formulate and use grammatical rules. In written proficiency an unknown text is given for translation from Norwegian into German, as well as an unknown German source text for translation into Norwegian. Assessment takes into account grammatically correct written German usage, good formulation skills, and good text comprehension.

No aids permitted.

A-F grading scale. 

As a main rule the examination is arranged on campus. Students who wish to take the written exam in another pre-approved location must apply for this on a special form.

Examiners

One external and one internal examiner or two internal examiners.

Course evaluation

Feedback from our students is vital in order for us to be able to offer the best possible courses and study programmes. The course is evaluated every semester.

The results are considered by/in teacher groups, the head of studies and the local programme committee.
