The student must have passed at least 100 ECTS.

In addition, the student must have an average grade of at least C.

The student's learning outcomes after completing the course

Knowledge

On completion of the course, the student:

  • understands research and specialisation in their own fields of specialisation
  • understands information gathering, analysis and dissemination
  • understands professional ethics
  • is familiar with well-grounded referencing methods

Skills

On completion of the course, the student can:

  • plan and conduct a research project
  • work independently over time

General competence

On completion of the course, the student:

  • can reflect on key ethical and scientific issues in their own work and in that of others.
  • has developed curiosity and understanding of the necessity to try to specialise in unfamiliar topics and disciplinary fields.

Content

The assignment in this course may be both theoretical (such as a literature review) or practical (such as designing and developing a prototype or testing a new technology).

The course includes reading, investigating, reporting, debate and discussion.

The student is responsible for finding a supervisor for the assignment. The title of the assignment and the name of the supervisor must be submitted to the course instructor no later then 15th of June in the student's 4th semester.

Forms of teaching and learning

The student and supervisor select a topic in which the student is interested and which, preferably, is relevant for the supervisor's own professional activities (either theoretical or practical). The topic is discussed regularly with the supervisor and in seminars.

If students from international partners attend courses, the supervision will be conducted in English.

Workload

Approx. 250 hours.

Coursework requirements - conditions for taking the exam

  • Submission of a pilot project no later than two weeks after the start of the semester.
  • Submission of a midway status report, where deadline for submission is agreed with the supervisor individually.

The coursework requirements must be approved before students may sit the exam.

Examination

Individual final report and individual oral exam

The students deliver an individual final report consisting of the work done and the results. The content and scope of the report depends on the subject of the assignment (see course outline).

An individual oral exam consisting of the student's presentation of the final report followed by a discussion of the report with supervisor and sensor. Duration of the exam is max 30 min with max 15 min allocated to the student's presentation of the final report.

Permitted support material is your own computer during presentation.

Letter grading scale A?F. A grade will be awarded on the basis of an overall assessment of the delivered final report and the oral exam, where the final report is emphasized the most.

External and internal examiner, or to internal examiners.

Conditions for resit/rescheduled exams

Students must take both exam components in the case of resit exams. Topics must be agreed with the course instructor in the case of resit exams or rescheduled exams.

Course evaluation

This course is evaluated by a

  • Mid-term evaluation (compulsory)

The responsible for the course compiles a report based on the feedback from the students and his/her own experience with the course. The report is discussed by the study quality committee of the faculty of Computer Sciences.

Literature

Literature relevant for the selected topic is agreed between the supervisor and the student during the semester.
