Lecture Semester

3th semester (autumn)

The student's learning outcomes after completing the course

Knowledge:

The student has:

  • basic knowledge of electrical machines, transformers and reactors

  • basic knowledge of magnetic circuits.

Skills:

The student can:

  • perform calculations on magnetic circuits

  • link, measure and evaluate results from practical laboratory work

  • Dimensioning single transformers

  • perform calculations on symmetric three-phase circuits with electrical machines and transformers

  • perform calculations on transformers, electrical machines and reactors in order to use this in circuit analysis.

  • Use Matlab/Simulink to model electrical machines

General competence:

The student has:

  • knowledge of electromagnetic phenomena and their application in the field of electrical engineering

  • knowledge of the use of model description of electromagnetic circuits

  • knowledge of schematic drawing and the use of CAD for this

  • Acquired competence in report writing.

Content

The following topics will be affected:

  • Magnetic circuits

  • Transformers

  • synchronous machines

  • Asynchronous machines

  • DC machines

  • Three-phase circuit calculations

  • newer machines, such as reluctance motors and machines with a permanent magnet

  • introduction to schema drawing with CAD

Forms of teaching and learning

The course is taught through lectures, group work, excursions and laboratory exercises.

Workload

250-300 hours

Coursework requirements - conditions for taking the exam

  • Laboratory assignments with submission of reports (group work)

  • Submission of 4 numbers of mandatory assignments (group work- 3-4 students) and their approval. Each assignments will have atleast 4-5 questions to be solved numerically (using calculators and related mathematical equations discussed in class).

Work requirements must be approved before the student can appear for the exam.

Examination

Individual written exam, 5 hours.

Allowed aids: Issued formula sheet. Calculator, with empty memory, which cannot calculate symbolically or communicate wirelessly.

In the written exam, there will be mainly (80%) numerical questions to be solved using calculators and remaining (20%) based on concepts to be answered theoretically on understanding.

Grading rule A to F.

Examiners

External and internal sensor or two internal sensors.

Conditions for resit/rescheduled exams

The exam will be held early in the following semester. More information about accounts can be found here.

Course evaluation

Continuous evaluation of the teaching throughout the semester, where the method of evaluation is agreed between the teacher(s) and students. Written final evaluation of the course.
