The student's learning outcomes after completing the course

Knowledge

The student has:

• knowledge of the sound system in English, the vocabulary and the grammatical structure of the language, with emphasis on differences and similarities between English and Norwegian, as well as insight into cultural conventions concerning language use

• knowledge of English as a world language

Skills

The student is capable of:

• using terminology to describe and analyse written and oral English

• using phonemic transcription and intonation transcription

• pronouncing English in a way that does not show a very discernible first language accent and intonation

 General competence

The student:

• is aware of his or her own language use

• is capable of working analytically, both alone and in groups

Content

Students will be introduced to phonetics and intonation with an emphasis on practical skills, and to the grammatical structure of the language. In phonetics, the students will, among other things, learn to use concepts and terminology to describe and analyse English pronunciation. This includes practical exercises. Two variants of English are taught: Received Pronunciation (British English) and General American (US English). Examples of key grammar topics are phrase structure and sentence analysis. A main purpose of this is to show the connection between grammatical form and meaning. Norwegian and English are compared to increase awareness of the differences and similarities between the two languages in terms of grammar and phonetics.

Forms of teaching and learning

Teaching varies between physical and online lectures, seminars, talks and activities. The learning platform is used to distribute information.

Approx. 280 hours.

Coursework requirements - conditions for taking the exam

• Two individual papers on phonetics and grammar must be handed in by the given deadline. For further details see term plan.

Required coursework must be approved before the student can sit the exam.

Examination

Individual oral exam

Individual oral exam, approx. 30 minutes.

No aids are permitted.

Grade scale A-F.

Examiners

One external and one internal examiner or two internal examiners.
