The student's learning outcomes after completing the course

Knowledge:
After completing the course, the student is expected to

- have knowledge about phonological variation in the Spanish-speaking area
- have in-depth knowledge about the syntactic structure of simple and complex sentences in Spanish
- have an overview of the whole Spanish verb system
- have good insight into the Spanish language's mode system and mode use
- be familiar with key aspects of Spanish word order
- have insight into contrasting aspects of Spanish and Norwegian
- be capable of using discursive strategies in order to make good written and oral texts of both a formal and informal nature

Skills:
After completing the course, the student is capable of

- using Spanish in different formal and informal communication settings
- expressing him or herself in Spanish orally and in writing in several genres in a precise, coherent and fluent manner
- explaining differences and similarities between the grammatical structure of Spanish and Norwegian, using relevant examples
- carrying out thorough syntactic analysis of simple and complex sentences in Spanish
- identifying and describing key characteristics of Spanish word order
- explaining mode use in Spanish and providing relevant examples
- identifying phonetic characteristics and relating them to regions/countries in the Spanish-speaking area
- understanding oral and written texts of some complexity in Spanish and describing the main content and detailed information
- producing coherent oral and written texts of some complexity in Spanish

General competence:
After completing the course, the student is capable of

- acquiring, communicating and reflecting on relevant subject matter individually or in cooperation with others
- understanding and communicating meaning(s) in Spanish in an independent and purposeful manner
- using a rich vocabulary
- explaining key topics in Spanish grammar
- mastering sentence analysis
- maintaining and further developing his or her own linguistic proficiency in Spanish 

Content

Students will further develop their knowledge and the five linguistic skills (reading, listening, writing, oral production and oral interaction), with particular emphasis on writing.
Emphasis will be placed on the students' knowledge of Spanish grammar, both normative and descriptive, and of sentence analysis.
Key grammatical topics in modern Spanish are reviewed and students will work on these in various ways. The course also focuses on translation.

Forms of teaching and learning

Students are expected to actively participate in lectures where the subject matter is reviewed and discussed and in developing their own and each other's linguistic proficiencies and insight.
The students will be given a number of assignments during the course, including sentence analysis, translation and communicating the content of texts in different genres. Students will also practise commenting on practical use of the language.

The content of the course will be available on the digital learning platform and through web-based teaching and supervision. Limited supervision and instruction at Halden campus is also possible if desirable, and if a sufficient number of students are interested.

Self-study is an important part of the students' work and students are therefore expected to acquire much of the course's subject matter themselves. Among other things, students are expected to take the initiative to form study groups and work independently with authentic texts, for example by reading Spanish newspapers and watching Spanish programmes on TV or internet.

The primary language of instruction will be Spanish.

Workload

Approx. 420 hours

Coursework requirements - conditions for taking the exam

• One individual written assignment must be submitted within a set deadline.
• One individual oral conversation about the subject matter and a topic selected by the student on a given date.

Required coursework must be approved before the student can take the exam.

Examination

Written exam, 5 hours. Permitted aids: Spanish dictionary. As a rule, the written exam is held on campus. The written exam is taken as a digital exam.
A special form may be used to apply to take the written exam at another approved location, if the time difference and possibility of necessary communication with the external place of the exam etc. so permit.

Individual oral exam, approx. 20 minutes. No aids permitted. The oral exam serves to adjust the grade awarded for the written exam (maximum one grade up or down on the grade scale A-F). As a rule, the oral exam takes place online via the learning platform. 
It is also possible to take the oral exam on campus.

In the event of resit and rescheduled exams, both parts of the exam must be retaken.

Right of appeal: In the event of an appeal, the written work will be re-assessed. In the event of a new grade being awarded, a new oral exam will be arranged, cf. the Regulations Governing Examinations and Admissions for Østfold University College, Section 18, sub-section 4.
