The student's learning outcomes after completing the course

Knowledge

The students have acquired knowledge of German syntax and the terminology needed to benefit from reading course literature and other general non-fictional literature.

Skills

The students can account for basic features of German grammar and are able to transfer knowledge into practice by communicating correctly and functionally in writing. They understand authentic German texts and are able to use their knowledge for teaching.

General competence:

The students are familiar with language structures and grammatical terminology, and understand how to teach their language knowledge.

Content

The course comprises

a)     Grammar II

b)    Written proficiency

Grammar II:

The students will enhance their knowledge of the German language system through basic features of German syntax.

Written proficiency:

The practical and theoretical basis of German Language I is continued with the aim of achieving a more precise, nuanced and varied language use. Free written production is a central part of the course. The ability to understand German is practiced by translating German texts into Norwegian.

Forms of teaching and learning

Instruction is given on our website (deutsch.hiof.no) and learning platform (fronter.com/oa).
The syllabus is presented here and students are expected to actively participate in discussions and other webbased activity when working with the syllabus.
The students will be working with assignments and practical exercises. Projects in groups can also be part of the course, meaning that students cooperate in the writing process using e.g. wiki technology.

Workload

Approx. 280 hours.

None.

Examination

Assessment is based on a portfolio and a written test.

Portfolio assessment:

Two individual assignments are submitted by given deadlines.

Written examination (5 hours):

Related to the reading in Grammar II several questions are given, testing the candidates' knowledge of analysis and terminology and their ability to formulate and use grammatical rules. In written proficiency an unknown text is given for translation from Norwegian into German, as well as an unknown German source text for translation into Norwegian. Assessment takes into account grammatically correct written German usage, good formulation skills, and good text comprehension. No aids permitted.

As a main rule the examination is arranged on campus. Students who wish to take the written exam in another pre-approved location must apply for this on a special form.

The grade is based on both the written exam and the assignments. The written exam is most important and the assignments may adjust the final result by one step up or down on the A-F grading scale. 

In the case of new exam or re-examination new assignments have to be submitted in addition to the written exam.

In the case of a complaint both the written test and the assignments are re-assessed.

Course evaluation

The course is evaluated by the students twice per semester and the results are processed by the faculty committee for study quality.

Literature

If there are changes to the reading list the students will be notified no later than the beginning of the semester.
