SSP10112 Oral Spanish Communication and Culture Studies (Autumn 2014)

Mandatory course in the one-year programme in Spanish.
May be taken as part of the optional 60 ECTS module in the bachelor programme Society, Language and Culture.

The student's learning outcomes after completing the course

Knowledge
At completion of the course the students will have

• knowledge of aspects of Spanish and Latin American daily life, culture and history;
• knowledge of various cultural expressions such as film, music and art, in Spain and in Latin America;
• knowledge of social conditions in Spain and Latin America;
• a sound and differentiated vocabulary in fields such as daily life, culture and history;
• knowledge of oral ways of expression in different genres in modern Spanish.

Skills
At completion of the course the students will be able to

• understand, account for and reflect on the content of texts in relation to the selected topics;
• express themselves orally and in writing and in a structured manner about various daily and cultural-historical topics;
• give a prepared, oral presentation on a self-chosen topic;
• adapt their language and message to different communication situations and target groups;
• vary their language structures and vocabulary when presenting the topics;
• collect and evaluate information from different Spanish-language sources.

General competence
At completion of the course the students will be able to

• present and judge the content of Spanish-language texts about daily life, culture and history;
• understand various issues of daily life, culture and history in the target language area;
• give a comprehensive presentation in Spanish of a current topic, either orally or in writing;
• express themselves in Spanish in a relatively spontaneous and fluent manner;
• use Spanish words and language structures independently and effectively;
• evaluate sources and choose relevant information when learning and presenting topics.

Content

The course is mainly taught as group learning with conversations in focus.
The students acquire knowledge and skills through a number of texts (oral and written as well as visual), and discussions will largely deal with topics related to these texts. Active participation is expected.

Forms of teaching and learning

Web-based instruction with active oral student participation.

Workload

Approximatly 420 hours.

Coursework requirements - conditions for taking the exam

• One oral presentation of 10-15 minutes
• One written assignment.

The coursework requirements must be approved before students may register for the final exam.

Examination

Oral examination lasting approx. 30 minutes. No aids permitted. Assessment is given on the A-F grading scale.

As a general rule the oral exam is conducted via an online learning platform. It is also possible to take an oral exam on campus.

Course evaluation

This course is evaluated twice each semester.

The results are dealt with by a group of lecturers, the head of studies, and the local study quality committee.
