Content

Oral part:

  • Knowledge of various forms of oral communication, e.g. presentations
  • Practising how to present
  • Introduction to phonetics with intonation, practical exercises
  • Examples of modern English fiction, discussion of the works focusing on argumentation and problem solving

Written part:

  • Various text strategies, writing longer texts
  • Textual cohesion, paragraphing, genres, linguistic strategies, style
  • Searching, judging, using and referring to sources; instruction in library use
  • Grammatical terminology and syntactic analysis

 

Forms of teaching and learning

Lectures, seminars and group work.

 

Practical training/internship

None.

Coursework requirements - conditions for taking the exam

Two oral presentations

Compulsory attendance at the library course (a minimum of 80%). Students who are unable to meet this requirement must submit an application to be exempt, stating reasons for the inability to attend.

Participation in the course at The Norwegian Study Centre in York, or alternative teaching in Halden with additional coursework requirements. 

Coursework requirements must be submitted before the deadlines given in the course schedule and approved before the students may take the exam.

Examination

Assessment

The final exam consists of two parts carrying equal weight: A portfolio and an oral examination of approx. 25 minutes.

The portfolio comprises three written assignments to be submitted by the deadlines given in the course schedule.

Both the written and the oral parts of the exam must be passed for a final mark to be awarded. Grading scale: A-F. Marks will be based on both language and contents.

All students must have an English-English dictionary such as Collins Cobuild Dictionary, Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, Oxford Advanced Learner’s Dictionary or another learner's dictionary for non-native users of English.
