Content

Introduction to general linguistics comprises various aspects of 'language' such as sounds, the forming of words and sentences, the relationship between meaning and words, language families, the development of language, etc.

The students practise the five language skills systematically: reading, writing, listening, oral production and oral interaction. They practise basic Spanish in writing and speech and account for grammar rules and central linguistic features. Aspects of everyday life in the Spanish-speaking cultures are introduced such as daily and family life, social aspects, geography, culture and traditions.

Forms of teaching and learning

Lectures and oral practices, group work and exercises.

Students without previous knowledge of Spanish must expect to put in considerable independent work effort to make a sufficiently rapid study progression. 

 

The course is taught in Norwegian and Spanish.

Practical training/internship

None.

Coursework requirements - conditions for taking the exam

  • Introduction to linguistics, including a web-based test.
  • One written assignment and one oral presentation.
  • 80% attendance. Exemption from this rule can only be granted following a written application stating the reasons for lack of attendance.

The coursework must be approved before a student may take the final examination.

Examination

A five-hour written examination and an oral examination of approx. 20 minutes. A combined mark is given for the two examinations, using the A-F grading scale.

A Spanish-Spanish dictionary is permitted at the examinations.
