Prerequisites

The course builds on knowledge of and skills in business communication acquired in the first year of study, or equivalent English skills.

Content

  • Basic translation theory and method
  • Language differences between Norwegian and English
  • Use of sources and aids
  • Functional translation as theory and method, including analysis of function and translation problems
  • Performing translations from Norwegian into English, including problem and target group analysis
  • Language for specific purposes in the field of business communication
  • Analysing and writing texts in the fields of marketing and advertising, public relations, and mass communication/journalism
  • Genre analysis, semiotic and multimodal analysis of verbal and visual communication

Forms of teaching and learning

Seminars with a high degree of student activity. Use of multimedia room and Internet sources. The course is intensive and includes analysis, discussion, writing, translation and assessment of texts in peer groups and in plenum. Individual feedback is provided throughout the semester.

The course is taught in English but source texts are in Norwegian. Information and documents are published on Blackboard.

Practical training/internship

None.

Coursework requirements - conditions for taking the exam

Two texts, specified in the semester plan, are to be submitted and approved by the given deadlines.

The coursework must be approved signing up for the examination.

Examination

Portfolio assessment: a portfolio containing three verbal texts is to be submitted. The three contributions should as far as possible represent different genres. Assessment on the A-F scale.
