Content

Knowledge from the course Intercultural Communication such as non-verbal communication, language functions, context, stereotypes, prejudices, values and norms, value dimensions and analytical tools is applied to enhance students' insight in the differences between their own culture and three concrete cultures in the English-speaking world: American culture, British culture, and one optional culture. Such insight depends on knowledge of the way these cultures have developed throughout the history and how geographic and demographic factors have influenced the development of a common identity. The students will also study the way dominant cultural factors are mirrored in fields such as the media, the political system, the welfare system, religion and literature.

 

Two novels and a selection of short stories are required reading.

Lectures and groups. The course is taught in English.

Coursework requirements - conditions for taking the exam

  • One oral presentation
  • One written paper

The coursework must be approved before signing up for the examination.

Examination

A 5-hour written examination. Aids permitted: English-English dictionary. Grading scale: A-F.

Literature

Two novels and a selection of short stories. Specified reading list will be provided when the course starts.
