Lecture Semester


The aim of the course is to give students basic knowledge of why the financial markets develop and how institutions respond to market development in various financial systems. Students should learn to select information, analyse facts and understand the logic of changes in an international perspective.

Content


Introduction; globalisation and the financial sector. Understanding financial markets: the government securities market, the debt market, the equity market. Financial intermediaries: the banking sector and nonbanking finance, insurance and pension funds. Why and how the financial system is regulated and controlled. International governance in search for ethical finance?

Forms of teaching and learning


Lectures, group work, presentations, term papers, discussion. Teaching and learning in this course is basically group-centred, with frequent use of web-based information on current problems to be used in cases. Details on teaching and learning are given in a separate note "Teaching and learning concept in GMI".

Practical training/internship


Two group presentations and one individual paper must be submitted and approved before taking the final examination.

Coursework requirements - conditions for taking the exam


The term paper counts 50% and a three hours written exam counts 50% of the final evaluation.
