Forms of teaching and learning

Topics that will be covered in Art and Visual Communication (2-D Shapes):

  • The history of visual art from classical antiquity to modernity
  • Own visual art work based on important art periods
  • Children's two-dimensional artistic style
  • Image analysis
  • The history of the subject
  • The Knowledge Promotion Reform with emphasis on 'the creative human-being' and the curriculum in arts and crafts.
  • Study trips as a basis for knowledge and general competence

Through working on these topics, students will gain experience of different work methods that are relevant to work at the upper primary level and lower secondary level. Adapted learning, multicultural and Sami perspectives, as well as basic skills, have a central place in the different topics.

Organisation and learning methods:

The course has a theoretical basis in which the alternation between art studies, one's own aesthetic creative visual art work, and subject didactic reflection forms the basis for understanding, assessing and further developing ideas in one's own work. Teaching is based on up-to-date research-based knowledge. There will be at least one compulsory study trip per semester.

Workload

The expected workload is at least 20 hours per week including teaching.

Coursework requirements - conditions for taking the exam

The following required coursework must be approved before the student can take the exam:

  1. Approved attendance (minimum 80% attendance) and study trips. The individual subject teacher will pass around an attendance list which the students must sign. If the student is unable to participate in organised study trips, he/she must prepare an alternative arrangement, which must be approved.
  2. A complete and approved assignment in image analysis must be submitted individually and in writing (800-1,200 words), in accordance with the semester plan.

Examination

As part of the teaching, formative assessment of works and academic progress is provided.

Exam form:

  1. Portfolio examination with exhibited products submitted by a specified deadline. The portfolio shall comprise the candidate's individual works in the course, with pertaining process documentation and log.
  2. Individual oral exam, duration approximately 25 minutes, based on a presentation of the candidate's own products. Questions from the syllabus and learning content of the course are also raised at the oral exam.

One overall grade is awarded for the course. The grade is stipulated by two internal examiners on the basis of an overall assessment. Grades from A to F are used.

The exam portfolio can be improved once in connection with a resit exam. The candidate must then take a new oral exam.

Course evaluation

Students can evaluate the course anonymously in writing on an adapted form (EVA3).
