Knowledge
The student
- understands theories and principles for graphic design.
Skills

- is capable of designing many different types of printed material such as magazines, posters, user manuals etc., as well as various digital channels.
General competence
The student
- is capable of communicating with both experts and the general public about graphic design.
Content
The course provides an introduction to visual communication using text and images for printed, interactive and time-based media. The content will be photography, image processing, formats, form, colour, typography, layout for print and web, idea development, pitching, marketing and design.
Instruction in software takes place in the form of individual supervision.
Forms of teaching and learning
Lectures, practical assignments under individual supervision and instruction in software.
Workload
3-4 hours of lectures per week.
Examination
Individual online portfolio assessment
The portfolio is designed as a website and shows the following products using images and/or drawings:
- A business card designed and printed by the student.
- Print of a poster in A1 format that advertises an event or similar.
- Print of a handout or brochure in A4 format.
- Print of a magazine of at least six pages in A5 format.
- Design for a notepad in A6 format.
- Design for a t-shirt with text and/or images.
An overall individual grade will be awarded based on all the elements in the portfolio. Letter grading scale A?F.
In the event of resit and rescheduled examinations, all parts of the portfolio must be re-submitted. This will take place in consultation with the person responsible for the course.
Course evaluation
This course is evaluated as follows:
- Mid-semester evaluation (optional)
- Final evaluation (compulsory)
The course instructor prepares a course report on the basis of student feedback and on his/her own experiences of the course. Course reports are discussed with the Committee for Study Quality at the Faculty of Computer Sciences.
