Knowledge

On completion of the course, the student can:

  • explain the elements that make up a complete game design
  • explain the design process and the different game development phases
  • explain the different documents related to game design
  • explain the basic technologies used in game development

Skills

On completion of the course, the student can conceive, develop and create an idea for a game design.

General competence

On completion of the course, the student:

  • understands the frameworks and conditions for developing a successful design idea for a game
  • understands the process from idea to finished product
  • is familiar with the process that leads to writing a game design, including the use of techniques for generating, selecting and developing ideas for games

Content

The course will enable students to develop key game design documents and to understand the process and phases that move a game idea towards implementation. The following topics will be covered:

  • Documentation
  • Idea development
  • Research
  • Writing techniques
  • Technology
  • Processes
  • Development phases

Unless otherwise specifically agreed with the course instructor, all documents written during the course must be submitted in English.

Forms of teaching and learning

Lectures, practical assignments and organised tutorials.

Examination

Portfolio assessment in group

Three group assignments must be submitted during the semester, in accordance with specifications and deadlines set by the course instructor. The groups shall consist of 3 or 4 students. Unless otherwise agreed with the course instructor, assignments must be written in English. The students are awarded individual grades based on an overall assessment of the portfolio assignments. Grading scale A?F.

All portfolio elements must be resubmitted in conjunction with resit exams.

Resit exams and rescheduled exams must be taken in conjunction with the next ordinary course.

Course evaluation

This course is evaluated as follows:

  • Mid-semester evaluation (optional)
  • Final evaluation (compulsory)

The course instructor prepares a course report on the basis of student feedback and on his/her own experiences of the course. Course reports are discussed with the Committee for Study Quality at the Faculty of Computer Sciences.
