Knowledge

The student will:

  • have elementary knowledge of interactivity in art.
  • have elementary knowledge of specific interactive works of media art in art history.
  • be able to assess interactive works of media art on the basis of aesthetic theory and art history.
  • be familiar with the most important institutions and organisations tasked with managing interactive media art / new media art.

Skills

The student will be capable of:

  • formulating and discussing ideas and issues in new art and new forms of art in writing using photo documentation and explanatory illustrations.
  • presenting ideas and strategies for their own interactive media work.
  • choosing relevant references for their own practical work and for written discussion.

General competence

The student will be capable of:

  • submitting proposals for the presentation of their own interactive projects and making simple assessments of interactive works based on art theory and history.
  • discussing ideas, themes, interactivity, sensory experiences, safety and environmental consequences related to the presentation and assessment of their own and others' work.

Content

The students will learn about art history and aesthetic theory that is necessary to be able to assess different experiences of interactivity in art. The knowledge will be used to assess other people's works and develop their own project ideas. Based on lectures, presentations of works of art, group work, text-based and visual presentations, the elective course will communicate knowledge about relevant interactive media art - history and theory.

The focus will be on the term interactive media art, interactivity in art, interactive works of media art and media artists.

Forms of teaching and learning

Lectures, group work, developing own concepts, preparing contributions to competitions, posters for conferences, articles in art journals or magazines. The work form shall be practical, independent and collaborative.

Coursework requirements - conditions for taking the exam

  • Contribution to competition: group work for groups of 2-3 students
  • Developing an individual project proposal.

Deadlines for submission will be given by the person responsible for the course at the start of the semester.

The coursework requirements must be approved before students may sit the exam.

Examination

Individual project

Based on an assignment / a topic given by the person responsible for the course at the start of the semester, the students are to develop a project proposal for an interactive work of media art. The work shall be individual (max. 7 pages). It shall meet the quality requirements for art project proposals, contain plan drawings, photographs and/or illustrations. The deadline for submission of the assignment will be stated in the exam plan.

Grade scale: Pass / Fail.

In the event of resit and rescheduled examinations, the topic of the assignment will be agreed with the person responsible for the course.

Course evaluation

This course is evaluated as follows:

  • Mid-semester evaluation (optional)
  • Final evaluation (compulsory)

The course instructor prepares a course report on the basis of student feedback and on his/her own experiences of the course. Course reports are discussed with the Committee for Study Quality at the Faculty of Computer Sciences.
