ITF13012 Introduction to Information Technology (Autumn 2015)

The student's learning outcomes after completing the course

Knowledge

On completion of the course, the student:

• has gained a basic knowledge in information technology
• has gained knowledge about the use of digital tools
• knows the history of the computer
• knows how to write an academic text and how to use source references correctly
• knows of which laws and agreements apply
• knows how the computer operates and works and have a conceptual understanding of how information is stored binarily on a computer
• has gained knowledge about developing websites

Skills

On completion of the course, the student can:

• use and learn about digital tools to resolve practical problems and work more effectively
• maintain a computer and install programs and physical components
• master basic HTML and CSS for developing websites
• devise a problem statement as the basis for an academic work
• correctly write an academic text

General competence

On completion of the course, the student:

• can work on projects and assignments, both independently and in teams
• knows how to share knowledge in a collaborative writing process
• knows the history of the computer
• can search for relevant knowledge on the subject and learn about it on their own
• can put an academic problem into perspective in an academic text

Forms of teaching and learning

The tuition is organised as weekly topics with practical and theoretical problems that are documented and reflected in a digital portfolio. The tuition is followed up with lectures and tutorials.

Workload

Teaching will run over 8 weeks from the start of the semester.

In the first 3 weeks, there will be up to 12 hours of lectures and exercises per week.

In the remaining weeks, there will be 2-6 hours lectures in addition to projects and exercises. 

Examination

Individual portfolio assessment

Assessment is based on a digital portfolio with four individual portfolio assignments. The student must pass all portfolio assignments in order to pass the course.

Grades are awarded on the basis of pass or fail.

Students who fail the portfolio assessment must submit new portfolios in conjunction with resit exams/rescheduled exams.

Course evaluation

This course is evaluated as follows:

• Mid-semester evaluation (optional)
• Final evaluation (compulsory)

The course instructor prepares a course report on the basis of student feedback and on his/her own experiences of the course. Course reports are discussed with the Committee for Study Quality at the Faculty of Computer Sciences.
