The student's learning outcomes after completing the course

Knowledge

On completion of the course, the students have gained knowledge of:

  • epistemology and learning theory
  • organisational theory
  • the relationship between organisational theory and IT
  • IT, strategy and business understanding
  • management in general and management of IT process in particular

Skills

On completion of the course, the students can:

  • analyze a business in terms of IT utilisation, particularly from the perspectives of cost savings, profit, operation, and strategy
  • contribute to managing an IT reorganisation process
  • undertake a study in the area of IT and management

General competence

On completion of the course, the students:

  • have gained an overall perspective of the relationship between IT, managements and organisations

Content

Theory of knowledge and social science methodology. Learning theories. Organisational theories and the application of these theories in information systems and system development. The concept of IT strategy. IT and business understanding. Management of change processes, particularly related to IT. Legal and ethical aspects of IT and management. The students will work on a problem in IT and management during the course.

Forms of teaching and learning

Lectures, discussions, writing and presentation of assignments in IT and management. Attendance is compulsory, and some of the learning material will only be covered in lectures.

Coursework requirements - conditions for taking the exam

  • Three compulsory assignments
  • A minimum of 80% attendance at and participation in lectures is required.

The coursework requirements must be approved before students may sit the exam.

Examination

Project assignment and written exam

The final individual grade is awarded on the basis of two partial exams. Students must pass each partial exam in order to pass the whole course.

Partial Exam 1 is a written group assignment of approximately 30 pages. The assignment accounts for 49%.
Different grades may be awarded to group members. Individual grades are awarded.

Partial Exam 2 is an individual written exam lasting 3 hours and worth 51%. No support materials permitted.

Letter grading scale A?F.

In the case of resit exams or rescheduled exams, each part of an exam may be retaken and the results of each part combined. The content of the project assignment must be discussed with the course instructor in the case of resit exams or rescheduled exams.

Course evaluation

This course is evaluated as follows:

  • Mid-semester evaluation (optional)
  • Final evaluation (compulsory)

The course instructor prepares a course report on the basis of student feedback and on his/her own experiences of the course. Course reports are discussed with the Committee for Study Quality at the Faculty of Computer Sciences.
