The student's learning outcomes after completing the course

Knowledge

On completion of the course, the students:

  • understand research and specialisation in their own fields of specialisation
  • understand information gathering, analysis and dissemination
  • understand professional ethics
  • are familiar with well-grounded referencing methods

Skills

On completion of the course, the students can:

  • plan and conduct a research project
  • work independently over time
  • seek and arrange regular supervision on their own initiative
  • express themselves clearly through structured writing
  • deliver well-prepared oral presentations
  • defend their own work in discussions

General competence

On completion of the course, the students can reflect on key ethical and scientific issues in their own work and in that of others. The course shall stimulate the students' academic curiosity and promote their understanding of the necessity to try to specialise in unfamiliar topics and disciplinary fields.

Content

The assignment in this course may be both theoretical (such as a literature review) or practical (such as designing and developing a prototype or testing a new technology in Makerspace/LAB for Learning and Media).

The course includes reading, investigating, reporting, debate and discussion.

Forms of teaching and learning

The student(s) and supervisor select a topic in which the student(s) is interested and which, preferably, is relevant for the supervisor's own professional activities (either theoretical or practical). The topic is discussed regularly with the supervisor and in seminars.

Coursework requirements - conditions for taking the exam

  • Submission of a pilot project report early in the semester.
  • Submission of a midway status report and work log.

The coursework requirements must be approved before students may sit the exam.

Examination

Report and individual oral exam

The report (individual or in groups of two) is assessed on the basis of a pass or fail.

The individual oral exam consists of a presentation of the report followed by a discussion. Duration: 20-30 minutes Letter grading scale A?F. No support materials permitted.

The report must be awarded a pass grade before students may take the oral exam. A final overall individual grade is awarded for the course.

Students may appeal against a fail grade. If a fail grade is changed to a pass, the student(s) may take the oral exam.

Students must take both exam components in the case of resit exams. Topics must be agreed with the course instructor in the case of resit exams or rescheduled exams.
