The student's learning outcomes after completing the course

Knowledge: The students will have gained knowledge of

  • the project's academic content
  • project planning and implementation

Skills: The students are able to

  • use appropriate software for project management
  • perform necessary calculations related to the subject area
  • follow the practice institution's safety regulations and relevant procedures and standards

General competence: The students are able to

  • present the project in a professional manner, both orally and in writing
  • cooperate with the company supervisor and staff

Content

The project is carried out in a company, organization, government agency or another place where engineers work.

The project's research question and preliminary report are prepared by the student in collaboration with the supervisors in the university college and the company.

50% of the project work is to be carried out in the company. If the practice company does not have the necessary equipments, the students may use the university college workshops and laboratories.

Forms of teaching and learning

The project is decided by the university college based on professional evaluation and in accordance with the agreement between the university and the company. Supervision and other communication may if necessary be conducted in English.

The project can be completed individually or in groups, preferably as an interdisciplinary project.

The students are expected to work professionally, i.e. independently, actively, project-based and solution oriented. They are expected to adhere to the practice institution’s HSE regulations and relevant procedures or standards, and to seek academic or practical guidance if the need arises.

The practical part of the course is to be carried out in the practice company in accordance with a schedule set up by the university college lecturer, the company supervisor and the student.

The project report is to be written in accordance with faculty established guidelines and forms one of the exam components (see “Assessment”).

All coursework must have been passed and approved before a student is eligible for the exam.

Examination

Individual assessment based on the following two components:

Written report in accordance with guidelines
Oral presentation of the report and the project work

The written report must have been given a pass mark before the student may give the oral presentation of her/his report and work. The oral presentation can adjust the written result by one grading step up or down.
The grading system A-F is used with A is the best mark and F as "fail".

Course evaluation

There is ongoing evaluation of the course throughout the semester with methods agreed upon by the teacher (s) and students.
Final written evaluation of the course.

Literature

The student presents her/his own literature list in agreement with the teacher, based on the academic content of the project.
